Mike Riggle is the 2014 Medford Area Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year.

Bob Bernklau will be honored for Lifetime Achievement at the Chamber’s annual recognition banquet on May 10 at the Simek Center.

Thomas Gallistel of the Medford Cooperative was selected by the committee to receive the Employee Excellence award.

25 Years Ago March 31, 1999 Rib Lake eachers ratify 2-year pact

The Rib Lake teachers unanimously ratified a two year contract with the School District of Rib Lake, which will give them an average 4 percent increase in salaries and benefits each of the next two years. The school board had given unanimous approval to the contract earlier in the month.

The 1999-2000 contract has a salary range from $24,877 for a beginning teacher with no extra credits to $45,409 for the most experienced teacher at 20 years and a Masters degree plus 12 credits.

March 28, 1974 Vern’s Service Center to Move to New Location 50 Years Ago Vern and Dale Schroeder have announced that they will move Vern’s Service Center to a newly purchased building at Broadway and Main this weekend. Business will be halted Saturday through Monday and the father and son ownership will reopen Tuesday.

Vern’s Service has been located in the Hall building at 675 East Broadway. The Schroeders purchased the downtown corner building from Skelly Oil Co., St. Paul, Minn. in January. During the interim a remodeling and redecorating project was completed.

75 Years Ago March 31, 1949 Authorize Sale of Lakeland Shoe Property

O.R. Thompson, president, announced this week that the directors of the Lakeland Shoes, Inc., had authorized the sale of the building and site at Rib Lake to the village of Rib Lake for $37,650 on a land contract. At a recent village board meeting the members voted to negotiate a deal for the purchase of the property at a cost not to exceed the figure that is being paid, according to Elmer Taylor, village president.

March 27, 1924 Ruesch and Doyle To Be City Mail Carriers 100 Years Ago Geo. A. Ruesch, son of Herman Ruesch on Route Five, has received from Postmaster Win Suits the appointment as postal carrier for the city of Medford. Mr. Ruesch stood as one of the three highest in the examination held here recently by L.M. Baird for the postal department.

Delivery serices will start April 1st, when the required preparation for receiving mail will be completed by the patrons. The city is supervising the house and business office numbering this week.

Conan Doyle will act as temporary substitute carrier.
