The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, March 21, 1974 VFW Bowlers Place in Money The VFW of Stratford Post 6352 participated in the 7th district annual bowling tournament at Hub City Lanes. Team number one from Stratford took first place in standings. Members of the number one team are Vic Wiesman, Orville Wetterau, Jerry Drachenberg, Ray Kaiser and Richard Drexler. They had a series of 2,934. 25 years ago... wednesday, March 24, 1999 Stratford Village Board Greg Leick will be the only candidate listed on the ballot for the position of Stratford Village president. Leick has been on the village board for seven years, last elected to the two-year seat last April.
Four candidates are vying for three seats on the village board. The seats up for election are currently held by Dale Heil, Harvey “Bud” Suckow, and Pam Warosh. All three incumbents are seeking re-election with Don Weber challenging them. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, March 21, 1974 Red Raiders Represent Marawood with Dignity The Marathon Red Raiders right now know how it feels to be on top of the heap. First they won the subregional on their own floor, advancing from that to the regional at Owen-Withee, where they managed to survive a hard tussel from Abbotsford.
Then they appeared in the sectional in Wausau and they breezed through that tournament with very little trouble. Friday night they met Crivitz and the final score was 61 to 45. Port Edwards did not have a chance with the Raiders Saturday night and the final score was 68 to 51. They now will play McFarland on Thursday.
The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, March 21, 1974 Students win in forensics meet Students from Auburndale, Athens, Edgar, Marathon and Stratford participated in the sub-district forensics tournament at Athens High School. Those receiving A’s will compete in Stevens Point. Winners there will compete in the state contest at Madison, April 27.
Receiving A’s from Athens were Lori Griese, Diane Ewan, Jolie Esselman and Dawn Riske, Andy Braun, Ron Mauer, Karen Peterson, Kathy Hamann, Steve Braun and John Peter.
The eleven Edgar students receiving A’s were Duane Zeitlow, Joan Joswiak, Jayne Reiche, Debbie Joswiak, Denise Karlen, Roxanne Schilling, Monica Blair, Ann Miller, Mary Schilling, Bonnie Kurtzweil and Diane Jagodzinski. 25 years ago... wednesday, March 24, 1999 A third man The Athens Village Board approved hiring a third maintenance worker, Jeremy Cramer, and called for a standard work day for the village’s maintenance workers and clerk Gloria Brodziski.
Cramer was hired to perform all village utility and streetwork duties. Board members said that the work day for the four employees should be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour lunch break to be determined.
Edgar All Conference Edgar basketball players receiving All Conference honors include Mitch Lambers, second team, Joe Wucherer, honorble mention, Karen Berg, first team, Danielle Bergs, second team, Terra Artus, honorable mention and Trudy Artus, honorable mention. A Good Year Maple syrup producer Doug Riske said that he is optimistic that 1999 will be a “decent” year for producing high quality maple syrup. Riske said that he expects to produce 75 55-gallon barrels of syrup this spring. Prices have improved sharply over the last five years. Riske is one of Marathon County’s largest commercial maple syrup producers.
1999 - Athens forensics
Forensic district competition was held on March 20 at UW-Stevens Point. Athens had nine students compete. All nine students are heading down to Madison on April 14 for state competition. The following students competed in the following areas: Extemporaneous, Ben Schultz; Poetry, Amie Emens; Prose, Mandy Literski; Solo Acting, Amber Zettler and Play Acting, Ashley Lange, Heather Rausch, Mandy Ellenbecker, Tanille Zenner and Kim Luetschwager.

1999 Web work
Edgar quilter Karen Schumacker assembles a quilt made of blocks received through a request posted on the Internet. The handmade quilt, including stitched fabric blocks received from around the world, will soon lay atop a bed at the Saint Joseph’s Hospital Rehabilitation Unit in Marshfield.
