Athens shuts out second opponent


Stratford defeats Amherst in huge conference game

The Athens varsity football team on Friday posted its second straight road shutout win, 30-0 against Lake Holcombe, to begin this season. The Bluejays have now outscored their first two opponents, 74-0, in eight-man football this season.
Athens sophomore quarterback Daxton Diethelm ran for a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed. Sophomore running back Evin Passehl returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Diethelm’s twopoint conversion run was successful.
Diethelm ran for a two-yard touchdown with only 24 seconds left in the third quarter. Diethelm’s two-point conversion pass to Passehl was good. Passehl rushed for a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Diethelm’s two-point conversion pass to senior tight end Isaac Bushman was successful.
Athens plays its first home game this season at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 8, against Bruce which has a 1-1 record this season. Athens is ranked seventh in this week’s wissports.net coaches eight-man football poll.
Edgar pummels Pacelli
Edgar’s varsity football squad on Friday obtained its first shutout victory this season, 50-0, at Stevens Point Pacelli.
Junior wide receiver Leyton Schuett got Edgar on the scoreboard first with a 43yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Teegan Streit. Junior Jase Apfelbeck ran for the successful twopoint conversion.
Senior Karter Butt rushed for a 10-yard touchdown and senior Harrison Graveen kicked the extra point. Butt added a seven-yard touchdown run and Graveen again kicked the extra point to give Edgar a 22-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Apfelbeck grabbed a 23-yard touchdown reception from Streit in the second quarter and Graveen added the extra point. Senior Kolhbe Weisenberger ran for a 25-yard touchdown and Graveen kicked the extra point to give Edgar a commanding 36-0 halftime advantage.
The Wildcats weren’t done yet, however, as they scored 14 points in the third quarter. Schuett caught a 59-yard pass for a touchdown from Streit and Graveen kicked the extra point. Junior Will Hackel rushed for a 56-yard touchdown and junior Brock Mauer added the extra point to end the scoring.
Edgar head coach Jerry Sinz was impressed with his team’s performance on both sides of the football against Pacelli.
“Kohle Weisenberger, Brett Baumgartner, Karter Butt, Teegan Streit, Jase Apfelbeck, Preston Dahlke and Maverick Butt all had excellent games on defense,” Sinz said. “On offense, Teegan Streit continued his accurate passing by completing six of seven passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Leyton Schuett had three receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Will Hackel and Kohlbe Weisenberger led us in rushing. Will had 64 yards and Kohlbe had 61, and they each scored one touchdown.”
Edgar, 2-1, plays at home at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 8, against winless Rosholt on Alumni Night. Edgar is ranked fourth in this week’s wissports. net Division 7 coaches poll.
Red Raiders sting Hornets
Marathon’s varsity football team on Friday shut out Rosholt in a big way, 40-0, on the road.
Senior Noah Thompson scored Marathon’s first points on a two-yard touchdown run. Junior Cody Radtke kicked the extra point. Radtke then caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Cooper Hoeksema. Radtke added the extra point to give the Red Raiders a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
Marathon senior Tyler Underwood hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback True Thurs in the second quarter, and Radtke kicked the extra point. Underwood then caught a nine-yard pass for a touchdown from Hoeksema. Radtke kicked his fourth straight extra point to give the Red Raiders a 28–0 halftime advantage.
Red Raiders sophomore Chris Marcell broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Radtke missed the extra point. Thurs rushed for a six-yard touchdown but Radtke’s extra point attempt was blocked.
Marathon, 2-1, plays its first home game this season at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 8, against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 1-2. The Royals enter this game having lost two straight games against Pepin/Alma and Pittsville after winning their season opener against Necedah.
Tigers tame the Falcons
Stratford’s varsity football squad on Friday won its first ever road game against Amherst. The Tigers defeated the Falcons in convincing fashion, 33-13. It was also the first time Stratford has beaten Amherst as a member of the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large.
The Tigers lost to the Falcons in the WIAA playoffs in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017 before finally breaking through to beat the team in 2019. The Tigers defeated the Falcons, 197, in the 2019 Level 4 playoff game at D.C. Everest to advance into the state championship.
Stratford junior quarterback Jack Tubbs had a huge game on Friday against Amherst. Tubbs completed six of 10 passes for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running 11 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. Seniors Payton Glenn and Cole Tichy were on the receiving end of Tubbs’ touchdown throws.
Tigers senior Koehler Kilty led the team in rushing with 31 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown. Senior Gavin Leonhardt ran nine times for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Junior Carter Lueck paced Stratford’s defense with nine tackles and junior Caleb Wrensch had seven tackles and a quarterback sack. Kilty accumulated six tackles and an interception.
Stratford, 2-1, returns home at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 8, against Manawa, 1-2. The Tigers will attempt to beat the Wolves so they can get their first win on their new home grass field. Manawa has lost two straight home games against Marshall and Weyauwega-Fremont since beating Chetek-Weyerhauser on the road in the season opener.
