From past files of The Star News February 27, 2014 10 Years Ago Mike Bub enjoys trying to find solutions to problems. It is a talent that has served him well in his career as a computer systems manager, decades as a coach and while serving on the Medford School Board and city council.

Now Bub wants to take those problem-solving skills to Madison. This week, Bub officially entered the race to replace Mary Williams as the representative for the 87th Assembly District.

February 24, 1999 Man found shot to death in summer cabin at Hannibal

A 43-year-old suburban Milwaukee man was found shot to death in his vacation home in Hannibal Sunday morning. According to Taylor county Sheriff Don Wright, the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Wright said that Eugene A. Monte of Greenfield was found face down on the floor of the living room by his brother-in-law, Elroy Shilts of rural Gilman. He said Monte had been shot one time in the chest, but declined comment on the type of weapon used.

February 21, 1974 Airport Project Given Approval by State Agency

F.E. Wolf administrator of the Wisconsin division of aeronautics has announced funding for land acquisition and plans and specifications for runway extension at the Taylor County airport, Medford.

The state aid project proposed to acquire land to extend the present 2,800 foot runway to 4,500 feet. The amount of state money is $35,190 and it will be matched by county money of $35,190 for a project cost of $70,380 to acquire land.

February 24, 1949 Medford Rifle Club Formed Last Night 75 Years Ago Approximately 200 persons were present at the Old Corner last night at which time the Medford Rifle club was organized and Edward Riegert was elected as the first president. Other officers chosen were Herman Lemke, vice president; Herb Ziemer, secretary; Ed. Soper, treasurer; Ralph Abrahamson, chief instructor; Norman Ekdahl, executive officer.

Previous to the election, James P. Wilde, president of the Eau Pleine club at Colby, gave a talk on the club.

Dues were $5 per year, with $3 going to the National Rifle association.

February 21, 1924 100 Years Ago

Masons Lease National Bank’s Entire 2nd Floor of the new First National Bank of Medford building, for a term of 99 years. Both the Blue Lodge and the Chapter will make use of the rooms. The second floor will be built along the lines desired by the Masons.
