Writer: City officials should stop fluoridating water supply

Dear editor, As a concerned Wisconsin citizen and plaintiff in the federal fluoride lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, I am writing in response to the recent article discussing Marathon City’s challenges with its fluoridation system. While the difficulties in heating the water to dissolve fluoride tablets are indeed a pressing issue, I believe there’s a larger, more critical matter at hand that warrants our attention: the safety and necessity of water fluoridation itself.

Considering ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the neurotoxicity of fluoride chemicals, as evidenced by the federal fluoride trial against the EPA, it’s imperative that we reassess the risks and benefits associated with fluoridating our water supply. The trial, which includes us Wisconsin residents among its plaintiffs, underscores growing concerns about the potential harm posed by fluoride exposure, particularly to the developing brain. Fluoride is the new lead. It lowers IQ and increases rates of ADHD.

Furthermore, recent research funded by Health Canada has highlighted additional health risks associated with fluoride, including impacts on thyroid function and tooth damage with fluorosis white spots. With mounting evidence pointing to the dangers of fluoride, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify the continuation of fluoridation programs, especially in the face of logistical challenges and potential financial burdens.

While I understand the importance of preventive dental care, there are safer and more effective alternatives to water fluoridation, such as topical fluoride treatments, vitamin D supplements, hydroxyapatite toothpaste and improved access to dental care. We must prioritize the health and wellbeing of our community members, particularly our most vulnerable populations, by exploring alternative strategies for promoting dental health.

Therefore, I urge Marathon City officials to consider the mounting evidence against water fluoridation and to explore alternative approaches that prioritize public health and safety. Let’s seize this opportunity to protect our community and pave the way for a healthier, fluoride-free future.
