Awards announced for 34th Annual Midwest Seasons
The Center for the Visual Arts and Angela Johnson, juror for this year’s show, are proud to announce the award for Best in Show for the “34th Annual Midwest Seasons” exhibit at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau. The awards were announced during a reception last Friday, January 19, for this show and others that opened this month.
Artists from around the country submit their work for a chance to be spotlighted in the CVA’s most popular annual show. During the reception Friday evening, Juror Angela Johnson spoke about the process of selecting artworks and awards for Midwest Seasons.
“In making the final decisions for the exhibition I looked to the following quote from Aldo Leopold as a guide and chose work where I could feel the essence of the season and magic within the art,” Johnson finished her address by reading “Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins as in art with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language.” Aldo Leopold Best of Show went to artist Cathy Jean Clark for the piece “New Snow”.
Awards of Excellence went to “Conversations on the Sugar River” by Bonnie Schetski; “Queen Anne’s Lace Prairie” by Helen Klebesadel; and “Wisconsin March” by Sandi Wysock.
Honors Awards went out to Eileen Urness, Angela Schlagel, and Tayna Otto for their respective artwork displayed in the show.
“Each year Midwest Seasons has a little different feel to it. Angela Johnson, 2024 juror has selected a body of work that is visually warm but also warms your heart and mind.” Curator Madison Hager of the Center for Visual Arts “The Cold weather outside has me dreaming of sitting beside a fire like in the painting Nocturne Winter by Patrick Doughman.”
