Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 1 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Alvera Henrichs came in second in the first game. David Perrodin won first and Pat Frank came in second in the second game. Low score went to Butch Boris.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Book club
The Athens Book Club will discuss “Take My Hand” by Dolen Perkins-Valdez at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the MCPL Athens Branch. This month’s selection is a 2022 fiction by New York Times bestseller. Call the libary at 715257-7292 for more information.
Board game night
All ages are welcome at a monthly board game night at MCPL Athens (203 Alfred St., Athens). Games will be available to choose from, and participants are welcome to bring in their own games to play. Sessions will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m on Feb. 15, March 21, April 18 and May 16. This event is free and open to the public with no registration required. Family Story Times
Bring your entire family to story time at the new Alfred Street location. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to join library staff in Athens for this 30-minute program. Participants will read books, sing songs, and enjoy other literature-based activities. Family Story Times will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Feb. 12, 19 and 26.
Christmas light drive
The village of Athens is still accepting donations to purchase 37 snowflake Christmas lights. The manufacturer is offering the lights at a discounted price per light, plus shipping, in January and February. Those interested in contributing can stop at Athens Area Credit Union to complete a donor sheet. Businesses, families and individuals can pool their funds, and smaller donations will also be accepted. All donors will be recognized.
E dgar Parker birth
A son, Cooper Roy Parker, was born to Taylor Leffel and Sean Parker, Edgar, on January 29, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He weighed seven pounds, nine ounces and was 21 inches long.
College notes
Justin Martin has graduated from UW-River Falls with a bachelor of science degree in crop and soil science.
Skylee Manecke was named to the honor roll for the fall 2023 semester at UW-Oshkosh. To be named to the honor roll, a student must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.3 out of a possible 4.0.

Preschool, 4K Day
Edgar Preschool Screening and 4K Registration Day will be on March 15, from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information letters will be sent out in mid February to all parents of children ages 3 and 4. Repro Roadshow

Health care directives
Marathon City EMS and Aspirus Hospital will host an informational meeting on planning for future health care decisions on Sunday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Marathon City Fire Department, 408 Market St. Participants will learn the difference between Power of Attorney, Advance Directives and Do Not Resusictate.
The discussion is designed for families who are caring for a loved one at home or for those who have already transitioned to a skilled nursing facility. Jason Krautkramer, from Eckert & Krautkramer LLC will be available to answer any legal questions following the presentation. Light refreshments will be served.
50th anniversary team
During halftime of the Friday, Feb. 16, boys varsity basketball game, the 1974 state tournament team will be recognized. This marks 50 years since this team became the first Marathon boys basketball team to qualify for the state tournament. Come join Marathon fans to recognize this special team.

The Marathon County Public Library has extended its Wi-Fi hotspot lending pilot program until June 30. Mobile hotspots provide an internet connection in locations where a cellular signal is already available.
