Greyhounds make quick work of Indians in boys basketball

The weather outside may have been bitterly cold, but inside the Loyal gym, the Hounds hoopsters were heating things up on the hardwood last week. In the Jan. 16 contest at Loyal, the Hounds came out in a full-court press that raised havoc for the Greenwood Indians. Numerous turnovers translated into some easy baskets. Cashing in on the turnovers was Cain Toufar, with 11 points total. Hunter Walter and Rhett Lamovec came off the bench to score 10 and 8 points, respectively, in the first half. Walter wound up being the leading Hound scorer with 12 points. Isaac Jakobi scored 7 of his 9 points in the first half.

With the Greyhounds pulling off the press, the Indians were able to set up and run their offense. Unfortunately for the Indians, their shots were just not falling. With 10 minutes showing on the clock, Loyal was up 10-4. In the next two minutes, the Greyhounds went on a 10-point run to increase their lead to 20. The first half ended with Loyal holding a commanding 42-12 lead.

With reserves playing much of the second half, Loyal doubled the number of points scored by Greenwood, bringing the final score to 64-23. Adding to the Loyal score was Reed Stieglitz with 6 points, all in the second half. Bryce Deegan chipped in 5. Hudson Hanson scored 4. Landyn Johnston and Carson Bremmer both had 3. Jacob Schill scored 2 and Joe Treffinger added a free throw. Stieglitz, Deegan, Johnston and Bremmer hit 3-pointers.

Greenwood was led in scoring by freshman Keagan Gipe with 8 points. He was 4-for-6 from the line. Senior Kody Johnson tallied 5 points on the night. Cody Eckes had 3 ponts. Wyatt Mulvaney, Nicholas Vetterkind and Anton Livingston all had 2 points. Carter Johnson put in a free throw to round out Indian scoring.

With the win, Loyal improved its record to 4-9 overall (3-4 in the Cloverbelt East). Greenwood fell to 0-12 (0-7 in the Cloverbelt-East).
