A side of Kraut

Father’s Day at least started out fairly good
I learned a great lesson on Father’s Day that I shouldn’t trust my children to spray sunscreen on my chest and back before going swimming.
Sunday started out great when I took my daughters, ages 11 and 13, to the Marshfield FFA June Dairy Breakfast, which was hosted by the Heiman families that own the Nasonville Dairy cheese factory. I always love attending the Marshfield FFA Alumni and Supporters June Dairy breakfast, because it offers original, potato and blueberry pancakes to patrons. I love eating both potato and blueberry pancakes.
After eating breakfast, my daughters wanted me to take them swimming at the Vandehey Waters, which is a rather new aquatic center in the city of Marshfield that first opened last summer. I trusted my daughters to spray sunscreen on my body before I began swimming. I had my youngest daughter spray me down with sunscreen at the start of our swimming adventure and halfway through it. I had my oldest daughter also spray me down with sunscreen to ensure I wouldn’t burn my pasty white skin.
When we arrived back home in Stratford after swimming in Marshfield, I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and the majority of my chest and back were sunburnt. I could already feel pain from the redness on my body from getting sunburned. Luckily, my girlfriend Amy was there to rub an after sunburn lotion on my chest and back to help my skin stay moisturized and cool.
I needed to wait to take a shower until Monday morning because I figured that I wouldn’t be able to handle the pain of the water hitting my body on Sunday night.
The next time I take my daughters swimming, I now know to just spray myself with sunscreen to make sure I receive adequate coverage on my body. I don’t want to burn any more this summer, because it isn’t a good feeling.
My daughters were worried about making sure the bald patch on the top of my head received sunscreen, so they were more focused on that compared to my chest and back. I did not get sunburned on my head, so they succeeded in providing me with adequate suncreen on that area of my body.
Although my Father’s Day didn’t end the way I would’ve liked it to with getting sunburned, I did treasure the quality time I got to spend with my daughters throughout the day on Sunday. I would rather be sunburned than to lose my precious time spent with my daughters.
