wednesday, june 17, 1998 School, village sharing costs Drainage problems north of the high school addition have been causing waves lately.
Last Tuesday, the village of Stratford approved paying a portion of the costs, including paying for storm sewers in the street right-of-way and the street sub-base under that construction.
The school district’s building committee did not approve a bid proposal at their meeting last Thursday. They tabled the project in hopes that another proposal, due later this week, will be lower.

wednesday, june 17, 1998 Marathon School District projects lower tax rate The proposed 1998-99 Marathon School District budget avoids program cutbacks but balances the books by slightly lowering the district’s fund balance or equity.
District Administrator Robert Burmester presented the Marathon Board of Education last Wednesday with a draft $4,916,175 budget for the next school year.
The budget keeps school offerings generally as they have been, but reduces the district fund balance by $21,046 to $490,349, approximately 10 percent of budget. In 1996-97, the district fund balance stood at $573,350.
School officials have publicaly worried that declining enrollment, especially at the elementary school, could mean possible program cuts. State spending caps on public schools are pupil count sensitive.
