Spencer/Columbus/Granton wrestling competes in Eau Claire
The Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton wrestling team traveled to compete at the Eau Claire North Husky Invitational on Dec. 9. The Rockets competed in a field of 28 other teams, finishing in 19th place overall.
Taking the highest individual placing for the Rockets was Wyatt Karl in the 215-pound class. He placed sixth overall, earning the team 31 points. In the first round, Karl won by fall over Sam Weber of Kaukauna (fall 1:05), but lost in the quarterfi nal round in sudden victory to Greysen Reimer of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln. Karl then won by fall over Tyler Vanasse of Spring Valley/Elmwood (fall 3:33) before falling to Connor Murrenus of Arrowhead in 4:28 in the fifth-place match.
Mason Dieringer was the next highest placing individual for the Rockets, taking eighth place in the 190-pound class and earning 26 points. He won by fall over Jonathon Bartnik of Medford Area (2:28) before falling in his next three matches, first to Luke Driedric of Arrowhead in the quarterfinal match (fall 4:45), then to Cole Stephens of New Richmond (fall 2:28) and finally to Erik Martinez of Abbotsford/ Colby (5:11).
Taking 12th place for the Rockets were Gavin Andrew in the 120-pound class and Mikey Weiler in the 138-pound class. Andrew scored 8 points for the team, falling to Landyn Freeman of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln (fall 1:28) in the first round before winning by a 2-0 decision over Jackson Moritz of Eau Claire Memorial. He fell in his next two rounds to Jordan Lavin of Medford Area (fall 2:37) and Carter Benson of Baldwin-Woodville (fall 2:24).
Weiler scored 11 points for the Rockets. He fell in his first round (4:38) to Chase Fredrick of Chippewa Falls before winning by an 11-3 major decision over Kyle Whitcome of Bruce and by fall over Easton Anderson of Menomonie (0:51). He fell in his next round to Sam Schmitt of Spring Valley/Elmwood (2:49) before calling a medical forfeit before his 11th-place match against Ryan Schmidt of Kaukauna.
Taking 14th place was Sam Helgestad in the 175-pound class. He scored 6 points for the rocking, falling in his first two matches: to Vristol Short of Smiley, Minn (fall 1:02) and Riley Johnson of Chetek/Weyhaeuser/ Prairie Farm (fall 2:13). He won by fall over Kody Steivang of Chippewa Falls (5:00) before falling in the 13th place match to Emerson Lau-Melby of Holmen (0:58).
Fletcher Post took 15th place in the 126-pound class, scoring 4 points. He fell in 1:08 to Jack Ackerman of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, fell in 0:51 to Nolan Thompson of Whitehall and fell in 4:18 to Fjeordi Johnson of Superior before winning by fall over Dmitri Hilgers of Rosholt in 4:15 in the 15th-place match.
Drew Lang was the final member of the Rockets team to earn points at the invitational, taking 16th and earning 1 point. Competing in four rounds in the 144-pound class, Land fell in 0:35 to Alex Sundermeyer of Abbotsford/Colby and in 1:45 to Steven Atherton of Prescott. He lost by a 5-1 decision to Billy Miller of Blair-Taylor and by an 8-0 major decision to Brandon Wintlend of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards in his 15th-place match.
Also competing for the Rockets was Carson Kibbel in the 165 pound class. He competed in two rounds, falling in 0:44 to Jonathon Lamprich of Holmen and in 1:23 to Adam Foss of Chetek/Weyhaeuser/ Prairie Farm.
The Rockets took 19th at the wrestling invitational with 87 points. Top teams placing at Eau Claire were Simley, Minn. (547.5), Kaukauna (507) and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln (442).
