Eugene “Gene” Francis Melville, Cornell, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023.

Gene was born Aug. 20, 1940, in Chippewa Falls.

He was a graduate of Cornell High School and excelled in football, basketball and baseball.

Gene married his high school sweetheart, Charleen “Char” Marie Stoll, Oct. 8, 1960. They were married for 63 years.

He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, from Sept. 4, 1963, until his honorable discharge Sept. 3, 1965.

Gene worked at the Cornell Papermill, then was employed at Uniroyal Tire Company, where he worked until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and deer hunting, especially the camaraderie at deer camp. He spent many weekends camping up north, with his family, until settling into a permanent location at Winterhaven Resort. Gene and Char spent many winters in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Fort Myers Beach, Fla. All these endeavors created many stories that you all knew he loved to tell and make you laugh to no end!

Gene also was an avid Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers football, and basketball fan.

He is survived by his wife – Charleen; sons – Allen (Jeanne) and Paul (Corrie); grandchildren – Nathan (Christine), Greyson and Reece; great-grandchildren – Emalee and Corbin.

He was preceded in death by one daughter – Christine Ann; mother – Lorraine Melville; and father – Howard Melville.

A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 4-8 p.m., at Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell. Burial will follow Wednesday, Dec. 20. Check the funeral home website for cemetery information.
