Cornell City Council; Utility meters slowly getting phased out

By Ginna Young
Eventually, all of Cornell’s older utility meters will be obsolete, as the city works department is trying to phase out the older models and replace them with more efficient ones. While they’ve made good progress on doing so, after a Utility Commission meeting April 27, it was apparent there’s still a long way to go.
“They want to replace all that’s left within two years,” said Cornell City Council member Bill Kvapil, at a regular meeting May 4.
During the council meeting, members approved a request from the Cornell Area ATV Riders, to close Main Street, from Second to Third streets, Saturday, Aug. 26, for an ATV Show and street dance, from 2-9 p.m. The club also requested a picnic license to serve alcohol on the street during that time and allow for its consumption.
The show begins at 3 p.m., but the club asked for the street closure an hour before and after the set times, to allow for set-up and take-down. Kvapil and council member Sandy Schecklman abstained from voting on the matter, as they are both club members.
Also approved, was a Class B Beer and Class B Liquor license application for Silver Wolff LLC, owned by Christopher Wolff, for premises at 116 Main Street, formerly Big T’s North.
Schecklman also reported on the latest fire board meeting, saying that it was agreed all the firefighters will be trained in CPR, using a grant. The board also agreed to purchase a pumper up to $150,000, as well as two new gear sets.
