Rib Lake takes advantage of a chance to play, beats Wild Rose
RIB LAKE BASEBALL
Not really knowing at the time that Sunday night’s winter storm would end up being as bad as it was, the Rib Lake baseball team was even more thankful to get on a field once this week, even if it meant taking a long trip to play a short game.
The Redmen used three big innings to easily handle host Wild Rose 14-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon. Three pitchers combined to allow just one hit, the team played errorless defense and the hits with runners on base that eluded Rib Lake in its first three games happened more frequently in this one.
The win pushed Rib Lake’s early season record to 2-2. Wild Rose fell to 1-5.
“They did us a favor by playing us because it was their fourth game of the week,” Rib Lake head coach Dick Iverson said. “Their coach was very understanding in realizing we were just desperate for games and he said he’d play us. They’re young and inexperienced and to play four games in a week can be kind of rough.”
Andrew Wudi walked, stole second base, moved to third on Jackson Blomberg’s ground ball and scored on a wild pitch to put Rib Lake on the board in the top of the first inning. A four-run second put Rib Lake in control. Dominic Quednow singled, Brady Heiser walked and Seth Borchardt singled in Quednow. A misplayed fly ball led to two runs and Blomberg’s hit drove in the fourth run of the inning. A five-run third really broke the game open. It started with another misplayed fly ball. Two walks loaded the bases with two outs. An error, Talon Scheithauer’s three-run double and Wudi’s RBI single made it 10-0.
The Redmen got a fourth-inning run on a passed ball. In the fifth, Aiden Stapleton walked, Michael Borchardt singled and Ethan Cook had an RBI single. Three walks led to two more runs to close the scoring.
Scheithauer started on the mound and struck out one batter in two innings. Wudi pitched a scoreless third. Quednow struck out three and allowed a hit in two innings.
“It was nice to get a game in,” Iverson said. “Defensively we played well. We didn’t have any errors. Ethan Cook threw a runner out. He caught a few innings which was nice. We were trying to get him some innings there. It was nice to get Dom some pitching innings. We’ve been trying to get him some innings because he could be a big part of our pitching this year.
We just haven’t gotten the non-conference games to get him those innings. It was nice to rest Michael and Jackson from catching also.”
Rib Lake’s Marawood North games with Athens this week have been moved to a doubleheader that is hoped to be played Friday at 4 p.m. Next week, the Redmen are scheduled to go to Prentice Monday and host the Buccaneers on April 27 in North play and then travel to Auburndale on April 28 for a Marawood crossover game.
