A side of Kraut

I have spring fever this week
It feels great to smell the fresh spring air outside this week. These temperatures in the 70s and 80s just warm my heart. I even donned a Hawaiian shirt and shorts this week. Considering I still have my beard, my girlfriend Amy tells me I look similar to actor Tom Selleck. I don’t know about this comparison because he only has a mustache.
I love hearing Bob Uecker call Milwaukee Brewers’ games on the radio and knowing our local high school baseball, softball and track teams are finally able to compete outside this week. Marathon’s varsity golf squad even played in the first leg of the Marawood Conference meet on Tuesday at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. I will eventually get all the spring varsity sports team preview stories and team photos in The Record-Review.
The Athens and Stratford varsity boys and girls track and field teams will compete outside at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 14, at Medford High School’s meet. This Friday, April 14, the Athens, Edgar and Marathon varsity boys and girls track and field squads will compete at 4:30 p.m. at Marathon High School’s home outdoor meet. There should be a large crowd watching these first outside track and field meets at the end of this week.
On Tuesday, April 18, the Athens and Stratford varsity boys and girls track and field teams will compete at 4:30 p.m. at the Mosinee High School meet.
It will be another tough race to determine a Marawood South Conference softball champion this season. I figured Stratford would give Assumption a run for its money on Tuesday but the Royals swept their home doubleheader against the Tigers.
Assumption is a very tough softball squad again this season with the majority of its players on last season’s WIAA Division 5 state championship team back this year. The Royals’ ace pitcher, Ava Schill, returns for her senior season this spring. It’ll be interesting to see if a solid team like Edgar or Marathon can defeat Assumption this season.
The Athens softball squad, which is loaded with talented players this season, should battle against Chequamegon and Phillips for the Marawood North Conference championship this spring.
In Marawood South baseball, it’ll be usual suspects Auburndale, Marathon and Stratford battling against each other for the conference title. I’ll have the Athens, Edgar, Marathon and Stratford varsity baseball team preview stories and team photos in the next few editions of The Record-Review.
It’s a mistake to count out Athens baseball in the race for the Marawood North crown this season, because the Bluejays are always a scrappy bunch.
