THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1973 Men bowlers hold banquet The Stratford Men’s Bowling Association held its 1972-73 banquet at Holiday Hall Saturday evening. Lunch was served following the presentation of prizes. There were 42 entries in the team events and Martyn’s Std. Oil won first prize with a total of 2,972 pins, receiving $70 plus a trophy. There were 11 prizes given out.
There were 196 entries in singles, with Don Wiesman receiving first prize of $30 and a trophy with a total of 672 pins. Fifty prizes were given, a total of $294.
In the doubles event, there were 100 entries. Joe Borchardt and Bob Palmer took first prize of $50 and a trophy with a total of 1,249 pins. There were 25 prizes given.
25 YEARS AGO...
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998 Kramer is sole name on Stratford school ballot Only one name is on the April 7 Stratford School Board ballot. Marty Kramer is running for the seat currently held by Gilbert Leick, who is not seeking re-election.
Kramer is the son of the late Martin and Theresa Kramer, former dairy farmers in the town of Cleveland. Kramer is a graduate of Stratford High School and has served in the military.
He graduated from Taylor County Teachers College in Medford and then completed his undergraduate degree at Northland College in Ashland with a bachelor of science degree in education.
RECORD R EVIEW 50 YEARS AGO...
THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1973 Athens High recognizes fouryear cheerleaders Three Athens High School senior girls were recently recognized with special pins for completing four years as high school cheerleaders. All three were also cheerleaders in junior high.
The girls are Doreen Weiler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Weiler, Mary Bergmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Bergmann and Kathy Braun, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Braun.
Besides cheerleading, the three girls have been extremely active in numerous extra-curricular activities and maintained membership in the National Honor Society.
25 YEARS AGO...
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998 Athens School Board candidates are upbeat The three candidates for Athens Board of Education told an audience of 39 voters Monday night that school and community teamwork, parent involvement and good communication will keep the local school system successful.
Answering questions mostly given to them ahead of time, Ed Schmidt, town of Rietbrock, Tamey Zenner, town of Rietbrock and Barb Heier, Athens, failed to lay out positions that made it easy to distinguish between the candidates. The uniformly upbeat candidates said that they all wanted the best Athens educational system possible, one that encouraged student success and was sensitive to the needs of parents and taxpayers.
