As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the staff at the Colby Community Library wishes to thank patrons, volunteers, and the community for the tremendous support of the library and its programs. The public is invited to participate in the upcoming events.

To celebrate Colby’s Sesquicentennial, the Friends of the Colby Library group is hosting a Victorian Christmas Tea on Saturday, December 2 at 11 a.m. in the CCL’s Community Room. Tickets will be $25 and will start being sold on Wednesday, November 1. You may call the library at 715-223-2000 to reserve a spot, but payment must be made a week after registering. The event will feature three tea courses and three food courses. There will be 42 tickets sold for the tea. This event is for adults only. Vintage attire is encouraged.

If you are a Friends member, please remember help is needed to serve the tea guests. Please call the library to volunteer.

While out and about shopping, look for items to purchase and donate to the “Busy Bee Backpacks” service project in November. Youth patients at area medical centers will receive the backpacks, and the Friends of the CCL are asking the community to contribute new small toys, stuffed animals, dolls or action figures, games, activity books, and other items to keep youth busy while undergoing treatments.

Bring the new items to the CCL from November 1-22. Please avoid seasonal items, as the backpacks are distributed throughout the year. Also, the library will be adding new books to each backpack, so please do not purchase them.

In November 2024, the Foodstuction service project will return to benefit local food pantries, so be thinking of great ideas for food sculptures to create at the CCL.

TGIF

The TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) class, “Make Your Own Leather Earrings,” will be held Friday, November 10 at 6 p.m. in the RCU Community Room at the CCL. The event for adults, hosted by the Friends of the CCL, has 30 students and is filled. For those who will be attending, snacks and beverages are welcome.

If you have suggestions for upcoming classes/instructors, please contact the library.

Evening Book Club

The evening book club will meet Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m. The discussion of the book, “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus, will be led by Terra Newman.

An afternoon book club will be hosted on the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Call the library to register.

Craft and Hobby will be Friday, November 17 beginning at 4 p.m. Bring crafts of choice to work on and food and drink as desired. This is an evening for adults to work on individual projects. There are several library projects which need sewing; inform the library if you are interested in assisting with these.

Remember to be filling out the adult Read or View the Rainbow challenge folders. Entries are due December 29 to be in the drawing for Abby/Colby Chamber gift certificates.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, books and movies featured in November will honor the military in both the adult and children’s sections. Check out the selection for educational reading and viewing. Postcards to thank military veterans at the King Home in Waupaca were filled out by patrons. Jodi Will and her third grade class at Abby Elementary led this program.

Kari Jensen, of Aegis Therapies, will present a class on “Fall Prevention/ Stepping with Confidence” on November 14 at 1 p.m. in the Community Room at the Colby Community Library. It is free and open to everyone interested in safely navigating both indoors and outdoors.

The Colby Community Library is a Clark County Health Department Site for the distribution of free COVID test kits, N95 masks, and sharps containers. Pick them up during regular library hours. The library is not scheduled as a vaccine/flu shot site this year, but there are schedules available listing area sites and dates.

Thanksgiving Crafts

Craft kits are bagged up for Thanksgiving creativity to take and make at home. Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and children are welcome to select one craft per visit.

Story Times

CCL Story Times are Friday mornings at 10 a.m. and are for children ages 2-5 and a caregiver. Stories, songs, rhymes and crafts are offered in a family-friendly environment. Pick up a schedule of dates from now through December.
