Cadott Village Board; No decision on gun sales business

By Julia Wolf

The Cadott Village Board heard an update on a potential new business, during a regular meting Dec. 5.

Clerk Sandy Buetow reported she received a call from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), to talk about what is needed from the village, concerning a gun selling business, proposed by John Akar, at a previous meeting.

Buetow says the ATF representative told her that as long as the village does not have an ordinance against selling guns, the village board could approve the business, contingent on Akar receiving ATF licensure.

Board member Les Liptak says he wants to see the documentation from the ATF, before they do anything.

“We’ll wait for him to give us that,” said Anson Albarado, board president.

A solution for the Glenn Schofield property (801 N. Main Street) was also discussed, after the owners changed the topography of the land more than is allowed by ordinance, in an effort to slow the water flow through their yard. The Schofields consulted with a construction/landscaping company to come up with a solution, but have not been able to get agreements from neighbors yet.

The Schofields also considered drain tiling a portion of the property.

“If he won’t let me cut through his property, that still ain’t no big deal,” said Schofield. “I guess I could change the route of the drain tile.”

Since it is hard to do anything, now that the ground is frozen, board members voted to hold in advance any fiscal penalties until spring.

“If this had been addressed prior to anybody moving any... dirt, we wouldn’t be here right now,” said Liptak.

Board member Bart Chapek encouraged the Schofields to continue to talk with their neighbors and try to reach a compromise.

The board also approved the Certified Survey Map (CSM) for lots in the Hartford and E MD street areas, and an ordinance amending the zoning ordinance for Russ Falkenberg (ARF Property Management). Falkenberg, who is also a board member, abstained from the votes.

Board members also discussed having an outside agent review the village’s purchase power contract.

“Every time these renewals come up, I say I think it should be reviewed by an outside engineering firm, which we haven’t done,” said Falkenberg.

Falkenberg says he received an offer to look over the contract, as a courtesy to the village.

Albarado pointed out it would probably depend on the information requested, since some information is confidential to those in the consortium. Liptak suggested they get a list of items the person would like to look at, before making a decision.

There will be a special meeting Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 5:15 p.m., to hold a public hearing on the budget and discuss/approve the budget, after the item did not make the agenda.

Discussion of a referendum to increase the village’s levy limit was postponed until the next regular meeting, Monday, Dec. 19, because the needed information was not available in time.

Those who are interested in running for a position on the village board, can get the paperwork from the village office now.

“Now is the time to do it,” said Albarado.
