‘Cats respond in a big way

Edgar’s varsity football team was motivated to beat Abbotsford, 40-7, on the road Friday after suffering a home loss to Colby the previous week.

Wildcats junior quarterback Teegan Streit had a great game throwing the football by completing five of seven passes for 244 yards, an interception and three touchdowns. His favorite target was sophomore wideout Leyton Schuett who hauled in three receptions for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Edgar junior tight end Brett Baumgartner caught a 50-yard touchdown from Streit and senior wideout Avery Normington had a pass reception for 45 yards. Junior Karson Butt did his usual damage on the ground with eight rushes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Wildcats junior Harrison Graveen made both of his extra point kicks after touchdowns and he also had seven kickoffs for 328 yards, an average of 46.8 yards per kickoff.

Karter Butt led Edgar’s defense with 10 tackles and nine of them were solo. He also had two quarterback hurries against Abbotsford. Junior Kohlbe Weisenberger collected nine tackles and six of them were solo. He also had two quarterback hurries. Senior Carver Higgins had five tackles and three of them were solo. Higgins also had two quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss against the Falcons. Normington intercepted a pass.

Edgar improves its record to 3-1 in the Marawood Conference and 5-1 overall this season. Edgar returns home at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 30, to play Pittsville on Alumni/Youth Night.

Tigers 4-0 in CWC-Large

Straford’s varsity football squad won its fourth straight game on Friday, 14-6, against Wittenberg-Birnamwood on the road. Stratford and Amherst are the only undefeated teams in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large (CWC-Large) with 4-0 records this season.

Tigers senior Braeden Schueller completed five of 11 passes for 59 yards, an interception and a 40-yard touchdown to senior Connor Weigel. Junior Koehler Kilty led Stratford in rushing with 26 carries for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Jackson Ormond paced Stratford’s defense with 13 tackles and a forced fumble. Senior John Seitz III had 12 tackles and a quarterback sack. Senior Ryan Becker, Weigel and Kilty added 10 tackles each against the Chargers. Junior Cole Tichy had an interception.

Stratford improves its record to 4-1-1 overall this season. Stratford plays its homecoming game at 7 p.m. this Friday against Weyauwega-Fremont at Beell Stadium by Marshfield Middle School.

Athens wins homecoming

Two Athens varsity football players, seniors Kyler Ellenbecker and Aiden Janke, did the yeoman’s work on Friday in the team’s 74-36 homecoming victory against Alma Center/Lincoln.

Ellenbecker completed five of eight passes for 56 yards and three touchdowns to tight end Janke who caught five passes for 56 yards. Ellenbecker also ran the ball 36 times for 462 yards and four touchdowns.

The Bluejays improve their record to 1-1 in the eight-man football’s Central Wisconsin Conference-East. Athens is also 4-1 overall this season. Athens plays another home conference game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 30, against undefeated Thorp that is ranked No. 5 in this week’s eight-man football poll.

Raiders fall to Eagles

Marathon’s varsity football team lost, 50-22, to undefeated Auburndale Friday on the road. The Red Raiders now have a 2-2 record in the Marawood Conference and are 3-3 overall this season.

Red Raiders junior Cooper Hoeksema completed 15 of 25 passes for 175 yards, three interceptions and two touchdowns to senior Matt Annis and junior Tyler Underwood. Annis led Marathon in receiving with four receptions for 51 yards. Sophomore quarterback Blake Kraft threw a short touchdown pass to freshman True Thurs.

Senior Drew Love led Marathon’s defense with eight tackles and junior Payton Lawerence added seven. Marathon returns home at 7 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 30, to play against unbeaten Colby.

Colby and Auburndale are currently tied for first place in the Marawood Conference with 4-0 records. Edgar is 3-1 in the conference followed by Marathon and Abbotsford each at 2-2 and Pittsville at 1-3 this season. Auburndale plays on Oct. 7 at home against Edgar and at Colby the next week.
