The youth group at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Church, Marathon, will hold a teen retreat at Camp Phillip on Friday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 23. If interested, contact Sue Hintz, 715-432-5420.

On campus

UW-Eau Claire has announced that incoming freshman Alyssa Hall, Marathon, has received three scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year. They are the Blugold Fellowship Scholarship, the Caroline Welch Blugold Promise Scholarship and the Freshman Honors Scholarship.

Plant swap

If you’re looking to thin out some of the plants in your yard or are looking for a new plant to spruce up a room in your home, you can stop by the free plant swap at the Marathon County Public Library’s Marathon City Branch.

Through September 17, patrons can drop off a plant for someone else to have or can take a plant that someone else has donated. Plants will be set out on a table outside the library. No appointment or registration is needed. Just stop by any time that’s convenient for you and you may find your next favorite flower or houseplant.

Join fellow readers and Marathon City Branch staff for a discussion of Gillian Flynn’s dark thriller “Sharp Objects” on Monday, Oct.10, 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother, or to the half-sister she barely knows. Now, back in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story and survive this homecoming.

Fall clean-up

The Village of Marathon City will hold a fall clean-up on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Large dumpsters will be placed in the parking lot at Veterans Park at the corner of Third and Chestnut Streets. There will be a $25 charge for each load and special charges for various items, including tires, washing machines, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, furnaces, water heaters, humidifiers, freezers and refrigerators. The village is partnering with the Good News Project in Wausau to recycle electronics. Electronics and small appliances with circuit boards will be accepted for a 45 cents per pound charge.

Yard waste, toxic waste and building materials will not be accepted. This service is for Marathon City residents only. Identification will be required.

Rib Falls HCE

The Rib Falls HCE met Sept. 7 at the Rib Falls Town Hall with Diane Obermeyer hosting. Dessert and refreshments were served. The Pledge of Allegiance and Creed I were recited. Roll Call was asked in this question: “What motivates you to get up each morning?”

Secretary and treasurer reports were given and approved as read. It was stated that different grooming items are needed in Nicaragua. It was also said group bylaws need to be updated.The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the home of Deb Hilmershausen.The song of the day was “In the Good Old Summertime.” The Birthday Song was sung to Gloria Kreager as she received her gift from her Secret Pal.

Vegetable bingo was played, with all receiving prizes. Meeting was closed with Creed II. After our meeting, the group toured Debbie Gust’s vineyard.

Christmas cantata

The St. Mary’s Catholic Church music ministry will perform a Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 11, following 10 a.m. church services. Approximately seven practices will be held on Sunday mornings after 8 a.m. services. For more information, contact the church rectory.

Herb Kohl awards

Nominations of Wisconsin PK through 12 teachers and principals can now be submitted online at KohlEducation. org for the 2023 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation teacher Fellowship and principal Leadership awards. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 5 p.m.

Awards are $6,000, with an additional $6,000 grant going to the school of each selected teacher and principal. Established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation awards 100 fellowships and 16 leadership awards annually from among all applicants throughout the state. For teachers or principals to be considered, they must first be nominated by a parent, student, other teacher, community member, or school administrator. Wisconsin teachers and principals in grades PK through 12 who plan to continue in their current capacity for at least one year are eligible. The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both in and outside the classroom. It also recognizes and supports principals who demonstrate administrative leadership and positively influence school culture. Online nominations must be submitted at KohlEducation.org by Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m.

Selection of recipients will be made by a state-level panel composed of representatives from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, cooperative educational service agencies, several education-related associations, and community representatives.

Since the program was established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Foundation has awarded 3,430 grants to teachers and principals, and 3,430 matching grants to their schools throughout the state for a total of $15,956,000.

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship and Leadership programs are co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and the state’s 12 cooperative educational service agencies.

Class reunions

Marathon High School Class of 1967 will hold a 55th class reunion Friday, Sept. 30, 1-5 p.m.at the Marathon Sports Center. The class will attend the Sept. 16 homecoming football game and tour the high school. On Saturday, Sept.17, the graduates will join the Class of 1992 at an open house at Marathon City Heritage Center from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The classmates will go to Marathon Sports Center at 6 p.m. with moonlight bowling scheduled for 9 p.m.

The Marathon High School Class of 1992 will hold a reunion. Classmates will attend the Friday, Sept. 16, homecoming football game and attend an open house on Saturday, Sept. 17, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Marathon City Heritage Center. The group will socialize afterwards at the Arrow Tap Tavern starting at 6 p.m.

Book festival

The Central Wisconsin Book Festival sponsored by the Marathon County Public Library is excited to welcome back one of the Midwest’s best-known and revered writers, Jerry Apps, to share his new memoir for one of the first events of our 2022 festival. He will give an online talk on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Apps will virtually read from “More than Words: A Memoir of a Writing Life.” Recalling a nearly six-decade writing career, Apps gives readers an inside look at his creative process, research strategies and other experiences in the publishing world, as well as stories from the road - funny, heartwarming, a little harrowing - as he crisscrossed the Midwest for research and book readings.

The book is scheduled to be published in November by Wisconsin Historical Society Press. The book festival audience will be the first to hear it before the book hits the shelves.
