I can testify that sometimes ….

I can testify that sometimes there is never a dull moment around here. Take this week for example. Sunday was pretty normal. Wait for 10:30 so I can watch the church service from Trinity. Then eat lunch, wait some more and then watch golf. It is something to keep up with as there are so many new players.
Monday came and I knew Jackie and Bob were heading home. She had told me she’d try to call before they left. I was ready at 6:30, but no call came. I just assumed they were on their way and I think Stephanie was picking them up.
Tuesday came and I figured Jackie would call when she was able. Just before 10, Kay from activities came by to say the fourth graders from Owen were upstairs and would I like to join them? I turned her down as “The Price Is Right” was on and I wanted to watch, as I do every day, to see if Bob Barker might come back and take over like in the good old days.
Just about then, the door came open and in walked four little tykes, for sure not fourth graders. Each was carrying a tulip, which I was soon to learn came from my old yard back in Loyal. Behind them was Savanna Dietsche, their day babysitter and my great-granddaughter who lives there now; and behind them, probably the instigator, Jackie.
Savanna had another mission. She hopped on a chair and took down the tree she had given me last fall. The lights on it had been burning night and day and finally gave out. The tree stands right behind three angels which I know keep a careful eye on me every night. So the tree lights are burning again and I can wake up in the night and think how blessed I am.

Now to turn to some not so happy news. I was going to call the TRG and check something out. I may have worked there lots of years, but never called much. So, just to make sure, I grabbed my new Mueller phone book, which I had just picked up a week or so ago. I thought it was time as I found a number for someone I know still with a Loyal number. I think they moved to Marshfield six or seven years ago.
Then I looked in the Yellow Pages. Under newspapers there was only one listed, the Owen newspaper. The Marshfield News-Herald isn’t there either but is listed in the regular listing, but not the Tribune-Phonograph at Abbotsford/Colby.
So if you want to call the TRG, it is 715255-8531. Better write it down and save it. Never know how long before they might get around to printing a new one, hopefully more complete than what the one I have says it is.

I’ve added something new to my collection on the window sill. It is my license plate Shelby and Gary took off my Malibu when they took it home. It was a special plate for Korean War veterans and also a special number – 652.
The number dates back to my days in the Army in 1951-53, but I could only count 10 year stickers that show I’ve had these plates. The 652nd is only the second company I was in. The other was the 373rd Training Company.
Most of the so-called basic training came at Camp Stoneman, which actually was a staging camp for troops going overseas or coming home. Outside of a little marching and firing our carbines at Stoneman’s rifle range, the rest of our training took place in a classroom or on outdoor bleachers.
We often had to take our carbines, or weapons as they were called, to class. Sitting in the hot sun listening to someone talking was an easy way to fall asleep. The clatter of a carbine falling to the ground usually meant someone had dozed off.
The other place was Fort Ord, where we got the chance to fire the M-1 rifle and sleep outside in two-man pup tents. It was kind of like camping I guess, but I did enjoy the comfort of a camping trailer or motorhome like we had a number of years ago.
The thing that really brings back memories is to watch the golf tournament when it is at Monterey Bay. It is right on the Pacific Ocean and that was part of Fort Ord back then.

I found this interesting. How do you write Dec. 31, 2023? One way would be 12/31/23. Then someone came up with 12.31.23. Pretty clever, but since I didn’t think of it, makes you wonder if someone didn’t have much else to do that day.

I try not to pay any attention to all the stuff on television. However, the recent news about Trump losing a $5 million lawsuit kind of kindled something I’d read about him. He claimed he didn’t even know the woman.
His niece Mary wrote in her book about him of having the attitude, “I can do or say anything I like. Just look who I am.”

The week was just about over when Jackie and Bob arrived with my lift chair I’d left at home. When I got ready to move in, someone told me there was a lift chair already. So I left mine home and Jackie and Bob put it in storage along with all their stuff from their home on Highway 98. They have built what they call a shed which has some living space in it. A new home next to it on Bluebird Lane is in their plans.
The lift chair that got left behind was for a much larger person and I never could get comfortable in it. So tonight I’ll try mine out again. Hope I have sweet dreams.
