Greyhound girls take 1st place at Medford track meet


After claiming first place at the UWStevens Point meet a couple of weeks earlier, the Loyal High School girls track and field team once again earned a place in the winners’ circle at their Medford meet April 13.
The top eight finishers in each event scored points for their team, and the Loyal girls scored early and often throughout the meet. One event in which Loyal stood out was the 100m dash, with Loyal girls clinching the top three spots. Addysen Wolf took first at 13.25 seconds, with Leah Scherer less than a hundredth of a second behind her. Aubre Robida came in third at 13.43. It was a similar story in the 200m dash, with Wolf taking first at 27.57, Scherer taking second at 27.61 and Robida taking fourth at 28.41.
Additionally, Shalisha Buchanan won the shot put event with a throw of 32’6”. The girls’ 4x100m relay team also took first, at 51.12, consisting of team members Scherer, Sheila Tellock, Wolf and Aubre Robida.
Other placings were as follows, listed by event.
300m hurdles: Tellock, 2nd, 51.97; Autumn Zvolena, 6th, 57.26.
High jump: Alyssia Zvolena, 2nd, 4’10”, Autumn Zvolena, 4th, 4’8”; Wolf, 4th, 4’8”.
Pole vault: Tellock, 3rd, 9’; Olivia Nikolai, 7th, 8’.
Discus: Hannah Smith, 4th, 79’2”; Buchanan, 6th, 76’9”.
400m dash: Noelle Teschner, 4th, 1:10.34. 100m hurdles: Nikolai, 5th, 19.57. Triple jump: Molly Zvolena, 5th, 30’9”; Summer Smith, 7th, 29’8.25”.
Long jump: Molly Zvolena, 6th, 14’6.75”; Gwen LaMarr, 7th, 14’6.75”; Summer Smith, 8th, 14’6.25”.
Shot put: Hannah Smith, 8th, 27’11”.
The girls’ 4x200m relay team finished fourth, with team members of Molly Zvolena, Nikolai, Hope Peroshek and Autumn Zvolena. The girls’ 4x400m relay team took third at 4:48.05. Team members were Teschner, Autumn Zvolena, Summer Smith and Tellock.
The many first-place finishes along with scoring in points in almost every event propelled the Greyhound girls to the top of the leaderboard with 145 points. The next closest teams were Newman Catholic and Medford Area, which tied at 111. Other point totals were Stratford 95.5, Colby 85, Bloomer 49, Athens 47.5 and Greenwood 5.
On the boys’ side of things, Loyal saw 10 athletes score points. In the shot put, Roby Beranek placed second at 44’4”. In the 1,600m run, Connor Genteman was near the front of the pack, taking third at 4:44.73. He also took third in the 800m run, finishing in 2:07.11. Parker Smith placed third in the 300m hurdles at 46.64, fourth in the high jump at 5’4” and fifth in the 110m hurdles at 19.37. Jaden Smith placed sixth in the discus throw at 104’1”. Rory Hanson placed seventh in the 400m dash at 59.93. Ridge Ashbeck took sixth place in the 300m hurdles with a time of 54.31.
Preston and Peyton Farmer, Elijah Henderson and Peyton Tsai took fifth as part of the boys’ 4x100m relay team. They had a time of 52.67.
The boys took sixth out of eight teams at the meet with 47 points. Other point totals were Stratford 146, Medford Area 136, Newman Catholic 103, Bloomer 78, Athens 77, Colby 44 and Greenwood 16.
