I’m sure glad the last ….

I’m sure glad the last …. I’m sure glad the last ….

I’m sure glad the last couple of weeks are over. Not this past week – it was great. But the one before that, it seemed like every time I wanted to use the computer two words popped up: “no internet.”

It is just another thing in this age of things invented, but I don’t understand them. Just have to cope with it.

Probably the biggest news since I wrote last is that I am now officially a walker. That’s because the Motor Vehicle Department sent a letter saying my driver’s license has been revoked. At first glance I was a little upset. Then I realized it was a three-page form letter, which means there are many more people in my same situation.

It is nice to know my car sits in the parking lot with four brand new tires with just 17 miles on them. They probably won’t go flat, or lose air like three of my last four did.

Maybe now I can write about a note I’ve had on my list for months. The words are “walking on snow” and it was something I enjoyed as a kid. Conditions had to be just right. Lots of snow, a period of warm weather and then cold again. It was fun walking to school. I didn’t have to stay on the path, just take off across the country. It might explain why I was still out walking to school when the bell started ringing.

I have a problem with that today. First of all, we haven’t had the big snows like way back when I was a kid. The other factor just came to mind. As a grade schooler I probably weighed 60 pounds. A few pounds added here and there would make a big difference.

I did find out last week what others do who don’t have a computer or column to write. It is just downright boring. Let’s just hope it doesn’t happen again. Once in a lifetime is enough.

If things weren’t bad enough, my TRG never came on Thursday. I’m still used to popping into the TRG office on Wednesday to get my copy right off the press. Thanks to Facebook, I do see things coming up. Like the story about my great-granddaughter, Savanna Dietsche. Then when I did get my paper I was not only surprised, but pleased with the story about her. Not until I read the story did some of her problems come back into my mind. She is just a natural with little kids. Now I understand why Florence’s goose in the front yard is wrapped in yellow, to make it look like a “Little Duckling.” They are pretty good at sending postcards, personally autographed, I might add.

Sue gave me an idea last week; I’ll just pass it along. I don’t know how many of you know, but my daughter Shelly is living in a group home in Neillsville. It is an old motel and has some limits, which means Shelly is left alone a lot. But Sue thought she might enjoy getting mail. Her address is: Shelly Berglund, 920 W. 5th Street, Neillsville, WI 54456.

The mail brings some cheery news. It is the annual letter from the Turtle Lake Community Scholarship Drive. It was something I got involved with as president of the newly organized PTA. I always said there were three groups involved. One group wanted to fire a teacher/coach, another group was in his support and some like me thought it would be something good for the school. It didn’t take long to realize there already were numerous groups involved with different subjects/ activities. At a meeting to elect officers no one volunteered to run for president. I suggested we just fold up, but there was already a scholarship fund I hoped we could keep going.

The newspaper got involved and every year published the names of people who contributed. Now two from the Lioness group help coordinate things. So from our very first year of giving out two $300 scholarships, last year they awarded 22 scholarships. Just goes to show what a little positive attitude can do.

Another name being floated around this week on Facebook is Bob Meyer, who is being inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame. I always said the Meyer boys were all good farmers. Then you have Bob. He is in a class by himself.

I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of when his name popped up first. I think it was probably the Legion Oratorical Contest and I believe he went quite a ways in his efforts.

Just another reason to publish a small community newspaper – it is the good news people like to read.
