wednesday, March 25, 1998 Athens board creates development authority The Athens Village Board on Monday created a seven-member Community Development Authority that will assist the board in bringing business to the village’s industrial park.
Board members voted unanimously to create the authority. Trustees decided not to grant the Authority the power to act on behalf of the village board at this time.
Trustee Joe Tessmer argued for a “go slow” approach.
“Let’s just wait and see how it goes,” he said. “And then we can give them the power.”
Athens Village President Matt Viegut said that the board decision would not hamper the Authority’s work and, in his opinion, was the “safe” approach.
The Authority is able to tackle any number of projects, including “blight elimination, slum clearance and prevention, urban renewal and redevelopment, community development and redevelopment that will encourage well-planned, integrated, stable, safe and healthful neighborhoods, the provision of healthful home, a decent living environment and adequate places of employment.”
