A weekly perspective on sports

Casey Krautkramer Reporter The Record-Review Brock Warren, a 2021 Marathon graduate who finished his freshman spring season playing baseball at Division 3 Ripon College, signed a threeweek contract with the Wisconsin Woodchucks on Monday. He pitches and wears the No. 4 jersey for the Woodchucks.

Brock was playing his third season with the Everest Merchants adult baseball team, before signing a contract with the Woodchucks on Monday.

He isn’t the first local baseball player on the Woodchucks. Cody Hanke of Marathon and Drew Spaeth of Stratford, who were both standout players at UW-Stevens Point, also once played for the Woodchucks.

Both Brock Warren and Hanke are both former players on the Marathon American Legion Post 469 baseball team. This summer’s Post 469 squad concluded its season on Monday with a 7-3 loss to Wittenberg in the Class A Regional tournament in Tomahawk. Post 469 fell just short of advancing to the Class A state tournament in Viroqua.

Post 469 started the double-elimination Class A Regional tournament on Friday with a convincing 11-1 win against Niagara. Jaden Koeller, a 2022 Marathon graduate, had 11 strikeouts to gain the pitching win. Grant Warren batted three for four with two doubles and four RBIs.

Marathon defeated Wittenberg, 4-2, in the teams’ first regional meeting on Saturday. Tyler Underwood earned the pitching victory. Post 469 then defeated Crandon, 12-9, later on Saturday. Grant Warren was the winning pitcher and Pierson Hamann collected a pair of RBIs.

Post 469 lost to Wittenberg twice in a row, 9-5 and 7-3 on Monday, to conclude this season with a 25-5 record.

The Marshfield American Legion Post 54 Blue Devils, which has a handful of Stratford players on its roster, won the Class AAA Regional 2 American Legion tournament at Athletic Park in Wausau this past weekend.

Riley Bauman, a 2021 Stratford graduate who just finished his freshman season playing baseball at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn., belted a three-run homer in the first inning of Post 54’s 12-2 victory against Wausau on Saturday to advance to the American Legion state tournament in Sheboygan.

Kale Weisenberger, another 2021 Stratford graduate, also plays for the Post 54 Blue Devils. Jackson Ormond and Braeden Schueller, who’ll be seniors this fall at Stratford High School, play for the Blue Devils too.

Eli Drexler, a 2019 Stratford graduate, is Post 54’s assistant coach this summer. He pitches for the Division 2 University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

The Class AAA state tournament is this week at Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan.
