The American Legion Auxiliary Alois Dreikosen Unit 469 met on June 9 at the Marathon Sports Center. Treasurer Edee Zuleger called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. with 10 members present.

Opening meeting protocol was followed. Secretary Brenda Wirkus read the minutes from the May meeting. Anita Martin made a motion to approve minutes as read, seconded by Clare Blume. Motion carried. Treasurer Zuleger gave the treasurer’s report including final profit from the poppy sales. She reported expenses paid in May was the donation to Gigi Playhouse and to the Department for their portion of the poppy profits. Marlene Seubert made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report, seconded by Joyce Braunel. Motion carried.

Membership chair, Bonnie Schult, reported there are 95 active members. She will be contacting a few members to see what their plans are about their memberships. Birthdays for June were announced. It was reported that member Eileen Franke passed away and her funeral will be June 17. Seubert and President Kathy Grell are working on planning the memorial service. Chaplain Julie Carriveau will come to do readings and Marlene Seubert will work on finding a singer.

It was reported the Department convention is coming up in Green Bay July 14-17 and Schult would like to attend. Motion was made by Bettye Beilke to send Schult as a delegate to the Department con- vention, seconded by Wirkus. Motion carried. It was also reported the national convention will be Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Milwaukee. Other events coming up include Celebration of Freedom, which will be Sept. 9 and 10 in Portage with a chili cookoff and ALA in the Know workshops in Loyal, Hortonville, Stevens Point and Grafton. Schult reported on attending the county meeting on June 5 with Seubert. Spencer Legion supplied refreshments and snacks. They went through by-laws and made changes that will be enacted at the next county meeting (there were not enough members in attendance to make a mo- tion). Treasurer Zuleger reported that the Badger Girls Convention in Oshkosh was able to get enough volunteers so it will be running June 19-24 and Maddie Martin will be attending.

Thank you cards were read from the ALA scholarship recipient McKinley Marks, the post prom committee for a donation and teacher, Amy Trawicki, for letting the school use our bingo cards recently. Sign up Genius is being used to sign up for shifts at Veterans Park concession stand and it seems to be working out.

In new business, treasurer Zuleger reported that Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee is hosting baby showers for female veterans who are expecting babies or are new moms and they are looking for a donation. Anita Martin made a motion to make a donation, seconded by Schult. Motion carried. The auxiliary discussed ordering poppies for next year. After reporting how many poppies are left, a motion was made by Seubert to order 500, seconded by Jennie Skrzypchak. Motion carried. There are plans on replacing the flags on Main Street. The Marathon Lions and American Legion are willing to split the cost with our committee. Beilke made a motion to split the cost of the flags, seconded by Martin. Motion carried. Seubert asked if she can get the past president plaque so she can update it. She needs to find the years of service of the presidents that will be added. Closing meeting protocol was followed and the meeting was adjourned at 7:28 p.m.

Class reunions

The Marathon High School Class of 1987 plans to hold a reunion in September. The class will attend the Sept. 16 homecoming football game and tour the high school. On Saturday, Sept.17, the graduates will join the Class of 1992 at an open house at Marathon City Heritage Center from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The classmates will go to Marathon Sports Center 6 p.m. with moonlight bowling scheduled for 9 p.m.

The Marathon High School Class of 1992 will hold a reunion. Classmates will attend the Friday, Sept. 16, homecoming football game and attend an open house on Saturday, Sept. 17, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Marathon City Heritage Center. The group will socialize afterwards at the Arrow Tap Tavern starting at 6 p.m.

The Marathon High School Class of 1982 will hold a 40th reunion on Sunday, Sept. 4, 6 p.m. at the Marathon Sports Center. The event is being organized by Karen Lloyd-Champine, Katie Osterbrink and Laurie Hinderliter-Larsen. For more information, contact gretalvr@yahoo.com.

Fill a Backpack

Marathon School District will continue its Fill a Backpack Fill a Belly program during the summer months. Free bags of food for families in need are available on a table at the Marathon High School entrance.

Fun Days run

Marathon Venture Academy has announced it will sponsor a 15th annual Marathon Fun Days run and walk on Friday, Sept. 2. A one kilometer children’s race will start at 6 p.m. followed by a five kilometer race for adults at 6:30 p.m.

Sidewalk chalk

Help brighten up the sidewalk outside of the Marathon City Branch Library this summer.

Kids, tweens and their families and caregivers are invited to stop by the branch during the week of Aug. 1-6 and get creative with sidewalk chalk.Try your hand at some elaborate art, leave a positive message for someone else or just add a little color to the concrete. The library will provide the chalk.

Covid testing

The School District of Marathon is working with the Department of Health Services to offer free COVID-19 testing available for school and community members through Friday, July 29.

The testing takes place at the high school (southwest entrance) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

You can register onsite for both rapid and PCR testing.


Marathon summer schoolStudents in the “Chalk It Up” class at this year’s Marathon Summer School draw a picture of Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh” on Thursday with sidewalk chalk near Marathon Area Elementary School. There are 150 students enrolled at summer school at MAES this year.
