Sonnentag takes the championship at home

By Ginna Young It was a good day of wrestling for the Cadott girls team, as their home invitational Jan. 7, proved how far they’ve come. Carrying off honors of the day, was freshman Iszy Sonnentag (107 pounds), who claimed the Hornets only championship. To reach the first place match, Sonnentag started the quarterfinals with a bye, then won over Shelby Garcia, Bruce, in the semis, in a 1:54 fall. Sonnentag then took on Marshfield’s Ava Gardner, bringing in the championship, with a 6-2 decision. Also competing for the Hornets, was junior Alaina Kempen (132), who received a bye, then faced off with Macki Kaz (Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau-Melrose-Mindoro) in the semifinals, dropping that match by a 0:17 fall. Kempen moved onto the consolation semis, receiving a bye, before battling with Hayward’s Sam Chaon in the third place match. Chaon got the upper hand and took the bout in a 0:44 fall, handing Kempen fourth place on the day. “We still have a lot to work on,” said coach Caitlyn Kaz. “Very proud of the girls.”
