Each year, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chooses a student who exhibits dependability, service, leadership and patriotism, to receive the Good Citizen Award. Recipients are nominated by their peers and teachers, for the qualities they display in school.

For Lake Holcombe, senior Kayden King was selected, because of her involvement with the National Honor Society and the school’s new advisory team, which promotes mental health and kindness toward others, no matter the circumstance.

Despite not playing sports or doing a lot of other extracurricular activities, King is pleased that the DAR Award shows a person doesn’t have to be involved in every single thing that comes along to be a positive role model.

“You don’t have to stretch yourself too thin to be someone people look up to,” she said.

King’s philosophy is to treat people well and everything will fall into place. She also was happy to learn she’d received the DAR recognition, as it made for a good feeling, since there was at least one other student in heavy contention for the award.

“I was excited that my classmates and teachers thought I’d be a good choice,” said King.
