Carissa Reichert Nelson expanded her business, S& K Boutique, to a physical storefront in October. The Boutique is located on Cornell’s Main Street, and features a wide variety of crafts and gifts for purchase.
She says she enjoys crafting and when ankle surgeries put her out of work for a while, she started S& K Memories and More in 2019, working with photography and small crafts.
The inspiration for the name of Nelson’s boutique was also born at that time. Nelson took a picture before a storm, near County Hwys. S and K, and decided to use the letters in her business name.
In the summer of 2020, Nelson says she got big into doing sublimated tumblers and keychains. She also started doing sublimated shirts, some vinyl shirts and car coasters, along with some custom work.
“It was the fall of 2021, everything was booming really good, so I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll get a shop,’” said Nelson.
A few potential locations fell through, so Nelson says she put the idea on the back burner for a while, but the idea never went away. She thought it would be nice to have her own space for stuff.
“It turned into, I’ll be a small business that helps other small businesses get their stuff out there,” said Nelson.
She says she started looking for a storefront again and was able to find a space on Main Street. S& K Boutiques officially opened in the physical location Oct. 27.
Nelson’s idea of supporting other small businesses also came to fruition. Other artists and crafters have items available for sale in the boutique, such as knitted and crocheted pieces, sewn items, cards and wood decor, with more items and artists on the way.
Nelson says Cornell is a nice location for her, because it is close to her house and she can bring her kayak to hit the river after work, go fishing, go camping for a couple days, or ice skating in the winter.
“It’s all right down the road,” said Nelson. Right now, Nelson is the only employee of the boutique, though her family helps.
Nelson also offers classes and events at S& K Boutique, such as classes on knitting or using a Cricut machine, along with seasonal activities. She says those who would like to sign up for a class can stop in or call the store, with more information available on the business’ Facebook page.
S& K Boutique is open weekdays and weekends, with Nelson encouraging those who would like to shop to check out her website, at skboutique54732.myshopify.com, or the hours on the shop door. Those with questions or who would like more information, can also call the store, at 715-239-2028.
