Knights rack up accolades at championship/Regionals

By Ginna Young

Weather didn’t stop the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Knights Track team from competing at a high level this season, and at the conference meet and Regional action, the Knights showed what they were made of.

May 17 Flambeau Conference Championship

It’s been a whirlwind season for the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Knights Track team, culminating in the Lakeland Conference Championship at Flambeau.

“The girls took third place, with only six girls competing,” said coach Laurie Bowe. “The boys took second place.”

Crowning conference champions for the Knights, were junior Avery Turany in the pole vault and sophomore Emma Lechleitner in the 300-meter hurdles.

Placing first on the relay side for the boys, was the 4x200meter team of Turany, sophomore Daniel Person, and juniors Dylan Bowe and Blake Anders. Coming in first for the girls, was the 4x200 relay of sophomores Brooke Sime, Marcella Boehm, Lauren Samardzich and Haily Duffy.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team of Sime, Boehm, Lechleitner and Duffy, also took first.

Taking Second Team All-Conference, was D. Bowe, for pole vault; Anders in the 400-meter dash and triple jump; Turany in 200-meter dash; Boehm in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump; and junior Dawson Munson in the 300-meter hurdles.

The 4x400-meter relay team of D. Bowe, freshman Hunter Anders, Munson and Turany, also came in second.

“We also had a lot of personal bests last night,” said L. Bowe.

May 23 Flambeau Regional

With the success of Tuesday still fresh in their minds, the Knights headed back to Flambeau, for Regional competition and built on what they started at the conference meet.

“Many athletes did their best last night,” said L. Bowe.

Notching Regional championships, were Lechleitner in the 300 hurdles (49.43) and B. Anders in the 400 dash (55.11), while Turany took second in pole vault (12-00), followed by D. Bowe, for third in that event (11-00). Sime also placed third, coming in with 13.92 in the 100-meter dash.

Earning fourth place (top four advance in each event), were Samardzich in the 800-meter run (2:38.37) and Munson in the 110 hurdles (19.51).

“We did have one of our top athletes get injured, which affected our boys 4x200 relay that has done well all year,” said L. Bowe.

Second place went to the boys 4x400 relay team, along with the girls 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

“We are excited for Sectionals and hopefully, we have some athletes move on to State,” said L. Bowe.
