Edgar Public School students participated in a variety of community service projects on March 8. The students visited the Edgar Fire Department, made blankets for children in foster care, send kindness cards, cleaned up Edgar High School, maintained trails in the Scotch Creek Woodland Preserve and made blankets for veterans. The students were treated to games in the gymnasium, computer lab and cafeteria. They were also treated with ice cream bars and sundae cones for an afternoon break.
Youth Group
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Youth Group leader Juan Martinez will discuss St. Patrick at a meeting planned for Thursday, March 17, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the church’s youth room. All youth in grades 5 through 12 are welcome. There will be music, snacks, drinks, and games for the youth during a party on St. Patrick’s Day.
History Speaks
Join the Marathon County Historical Society and presenter Paul Clarkon Saturday, April 2, 2-3 p.m. for a History Speaks presentation on visits to Wausau by William Jennings Bryan. Bryan was one of the most influential men in the history of the United States. He was a defining personality during the Progressive Era, known for debating evolution in Tennessee and running for president on numerous occasions. He was a constant presence in the American political scene— including making stops and speeches in cities like Wausau. Clark will share information and photos of Bryan’s visits to Wausau.
All History Speaks programs will be broadcast live simultaneously via Zoom, the Historical Society’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel. If you can’t join them live, you can watch archived recordings anytime at the same places.
These programs, which are a collaborative effort between the Historical Society and the Marathon County Public Library, are free to watch and open to all ages with no registration required. Call the Historical Society at 715-842-5750 for more information.
Paul Clark has taught history at Wausau East High School for 22 years, and has earned master’s degrees in History and English. He lives in Wausau with his wife, Elayna, who teaches history at Wausau West High School.

Edgar Public Schools reports zero cases of COVID-19 among 689 staff and students as of March 11. The school has had 118 cases of the coronavirus during the 2021-22 school year.
Womens Club
Thirteen members and six guests attended the Edgar Womens Club meeting held March 8 at the Edgar Village Hall. President Judy Bergs called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Deb Gauerke reported the minutes from a Dec. 7, 2021, meeting. Area veterans shared their experience being on a Never Forgotten Honor Flight. The veterans included Joe and Chris Borchardt, Ron and Carolyn Hahn, and Charles and Shelley Lemmer.
The Womens Club agreed to meet on Thursday, April 12, 6:30 p.m. for a box social. All are welcome.
It was reported the Womens Club will hold a book and bake sale Friday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Edgar Village Hall.
Fish fries
St. John’s Catholic Church, Edgar, will offer fish fries each Friday 4-7:30 p.m. as carryouts only. The fish fries will be served during Lent through April 15. Call ahead at 715-352-3111 or 715-352-8105 to order either fried fish or shrimp. People can order by visiting the church dining hall in person.
Youth group
The Youth Group at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will have a St. Patrick’s Day party in the rectory basement on Thursday, March 17, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be music, drinks and snacks.
Food drive
CCD students at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will collect food and cash donations for the Athens and Edgar Circle of Joy food pantry during Lent.

Blood drive
The Bloodcenter of Wisconsin will hold a blood drive on Monday, March 14, 3-7 p.m. at the Edgar Village Hall. Call 715-842-0761 for more information.
Lenten schedule
St. John and St. Stephen ELCA, town of Wien and Edgar, have announced their Lenten schedule of worship.
Worship will alternate over the next five Wednesdays between the two church locations. Worship will be at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a soup supper at 5:30 p.m.
St. Stephen will have Lenten worship on March 23 and April 6. Worship will be at St. John’s on March 30.
Fine arts
Elvis Presley impersonator Fred “E” Heidmann will present a “Tribute to the King” on Sunday, March 27, 1 p.m. at the Edgar Public School auditorium. The doors will open at noon.
The performance is sponsored by the Edgar Fine Arts Association.
Senior events
St. Stephen ELCA will hold a community senior event later this month. Bingo will be played Wednesday, March 23, 1-3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

Garage sales
The Village of Edgar has announced there will be a community garage sale
Thursday and Friday, May 19-20.
Free lunch
Edgar Public Schools is participating in a federal program that provides free breakfast and lunches for all students in grades 4K-12. A free and reduced lunch application can qualify families for a waiver of registration fees and free milk at milk break time.
Circle of Joy
The Edgar Circle of Joy food pantry is open to those in need of food in the Edgar Village Hall on the first Wednesday of the month, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the third Wednesday of the month, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Poetry contest
Young writers between the ages of 9-18 are invited to send the Marathon County Public Library original, unpublished poems for a spring poetry contest. Winners will receive recognition and prizes. All entrants must be Marathon County residents.
