Lake Holcombe splits their final regular season games

By Ginna Young

It’s been a long road to get where the Lake Holcombe volleyball program wants to be, but the team is peaking just in time for the post-season.

Oct. 11 vs. Flambeau conference (L 3-0)

“It was a fun night with Pink Night happening and there was a lot of excitement at the match,” said coach Beth Meddaugh of the match at home with Flambeau.

The Chieftains battled the Falcons, but in the end, the sets went to Flambeau, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-20.

Junior Ava Story led on kills for the Chieftains, with 6, while sophomores Chloe Lee and Emmy Kirkman each had 5 assists. Junior Ella Hartzell notched 14 kills on the night, with sophomore Abby Jones coming up with 4 blocks. Kirkman and Hartzell also added 4 and 3 aces, respectively.

“The girls played hard against Flambeau and there were a lot of things that went well,” said Meddaugh. “Overall, serving was at 98 percent, which is phenomenal.”

Oct. 13 vs. Winter conference (W 3-1)

To finish out the regular season, Winter came to call, giving the Chieftains a good fight. Lake Holcombe battled to take the first set, 26-24, from the Warriors, along with the second set, 25-22.

“The girls played REALLY well tonight,” said Meddaugh. “They all worked as a team and communicated well.”

Winter persisted to take the third set, 25-17, but Lake Holcombe refused to hand their seniors, Karly Kirkman and Hannah Wincek, a loss in the final home game of their careers. The Chieftains reeled in the fourth and final set, 25-20, to end their East Lakeland Conference record at 5-7, with an overall record of 6-14.

Story had 11 kills, followed by junior Emma Lechleitner, with 9, while E. Kirkman had 13 assists. Hartzell ended with 23 digs and E. Kirkman had 19, with junior Abby Kane adding 4 blocks. Hartzell also added 5 aces.

“I’m very proud that they kept working hard at the end of the season and were able to play such a great game,” said Meddaugh.”

Lake Holcombe now travels as the No. 15 seed in the playoffs, to No. 2 Clayton Oct. 18.
