Athens High School’s homecoming week is this Monday, Sept. 19 until Saturday, Sept. 24.
Homecoming events this Friday, Sept. 23, include the powder puff football game at approximately 1:10 p.m. with the pep assembly at about 2 p.m. in the high school gym. The Athens varsity football team plays its homecoming game at 7 p.m. against Alma Center Lincoln.
The homecoming dance is on Saturday, Sept. 24, in the high school gym. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Birth
A son, Noah Steven, was born on Sept. 3, 2022, to Holly and Jake Latus of Hales Corners.
He weighed seven pounds, 10 ounces and was 20-1/2 inches long. He joins a big brother, 16-month-old Mason.
Grandparents are Allen and Becky Belter of Athens, Mark Schreiner of Athens; Steve Latus of Hales Corners and Audrey Latus of Bayview.
Great-grandparents are Gene and Jean Mercer of Mosinee; Andy and Lolly Schreiner of Athens; Sue Belter of Athens; Theresa Latus of Hales Corners and Judi Scherkenbach of Milwaukee.
Scholarship winner
Cassandra Riehle, a 2022 Stratford High School graduate, has received the Freshman Honors, Chancellors Academic Excellence and Materials Science and Engineering Excellence scholarships at UW-Eau Claire.
Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens card group met on Sept. 8 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Three games of Sheepshead were played. Norbert Lake won the first game and Andy Hoest took second place. Steve Klockziem won the second game and Sally Stubbe placed second. Sally Whaples won the third game and Dave Perrodin took second place. Pat Frank received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Farmers Market
The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday during the summer, from 4-7 p.m., in Athens Veterans Memorial Park.
Lions Club meetings
Athens-area residents are welcome to attend the Athens Lions Club’s monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m.
on the second Monday of each month, alternating between Balz Inn and Landmark Bar.
Anyone with questions can call Athens Lions Club member Steve Sondelski at 715-2181496. New members and guests are always welcome at the monthly meetings.
Apples Story Time
Autumn is the time for apples, so the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch is celebrating this fruit with a story time and craft event on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. until noon.
Children who attend Story Time will hear stories, sing songs and make an apple craft.
Parents wanting more information about children’s Story Time can call the Athens Library at 715-257-7292.
Christian music
Rockin’ Redemption will perform free Christian music for the public in the Athens bandstand On the Square on Thursday, Sept. 15.
People are asked to bring their friends and family, along with lawn chairs to enjoy an evening of positive music and fun.
Aluminum can drive
The Athens public schools athletic department has an aluminum can collection available for people to donate their cans year round at the Heartland Cooperative C Store, located at 900 Pine St. in Athens. Dale and Tracy Westfall transport the donated alumninum cans to a scrap yard to get money to help support Athens public school athletic teams.
Since October, $2,500 in aluminum can donation proceeds has been collected to support Athens public school athletic teams.
Family Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend Family Story Time from 10:30-11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, at the Athens library.
Parents/guardians can enjoy learning with all of their children through stories, songs and other literaturebased activities.
