Christmas cantata

The St. Mary’s Catholic Church music ministry will perform a Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 11, following 10 a.m. church services. Approximately seven practices will be held on Sunday mornings after 8 a.m. services. For more information, contact the church rectory.

Herb Kohl awards

Nominations of Wisconsin PK through 12 teachers and principals can now be submitted online at KohlEducation. org for the 2023 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation teacher Fellowship and principal Leadership awards. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 5 p.m.

Awards are $6,000, with an additional $6,000 grant going to the school of each selected teacher and principal. Established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation awards 100 fellowships and 16 leadership awards annually from among all applicants throughout the state. For teachers or principals to be considered, they must first be nominated by a parent, student, other teacher, community member, or school administrator. Wisconsin teachers and principals in grades PK through 12 who plan to continue in their current capacity for at least one year are eligible. The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both in and outside the classroom. It also recognizes and supports principals who demonstrate administrative leadership and positively influence school culture. Online nominations must be submitted at KohlEducation.org by Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m.

Selection of recipients will be made by a state-level panel composed of representatives from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, cooperative educational service agencies, several education-related associations, and community representatives.

Since the program was established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Foundation has awarded 3,430 grants to teachers and principals, and 3,430 matching grants to their schools throughout the state for a total of $15,956,000.

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship and Leadership programs are cosponsored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and the state’s 12 cooperative educational service agencies.

9/11 walk

The Marathon City Fire Department and other area fire and EMS departments will honor those lost on 9/11 with a silent memorial procession up Main Street in Marathon City on Sunday, Sept. 11, 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the event and show support for firefighters and first responders.

Hall of Fame

Marathon Public Schools has announced the Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022. This year’s inductees include Tony Lang (Class of 1973), Frank Seubert (Class of 1974), Randy Krautkramer (Class of 1975), Maryann (Hegemann) Witberler (Class of 1995) and Ed Szymanski (Class of 1940), high school principal, athletic director and coach.

A Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on the football field (weather permitting) on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend this event.

Youth bowling

Marathon City Sport Center will host a youth bowling league starting on Sept. 10 running every other Saturday. There will be limited spots available for either a 9:00 a.m. or 11 a.m. shift. Signup deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 7. Grades 4K – 2 will bowl two games with bumpers. Third through eighth graders will be teams of three, bowling three games. Book festival

The Central Wisconsin Book Festival sponsored by the Marathon County Public Library is excited to welcome back one of the Midwest’s best-known and revered writers, Jerry Apps, to share his new memoir for one of the first events of our 2022 festival. He will give an online talk on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Apps will virtually read from “More than Words: A Memoir of a Writing Life.” Recalling a nearly six-decade writing career, Apps gives readers an inside look at his creative process, research strategies and other experiences in the publishing world, as well as stories from the road - funny, heartwarming, a little harrowing - as he crisscrossed the Midwest for research and book readings.

The book is scheduled to be published in November by Wisconsin Historical Society Press. The book festival audience will be the first to hear it before the book hits the shelves.

Book Club

The Marathon Book Club will discuss: “The Martian” by Andy Weir on Monday, Sept. 12, 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive— and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet.

Rebel ride

A motorcycle Rebel Ride to benefit Special Olympics will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Weiks’ Pub and Grill, Rib Falls. The event will conclude with a raffle and evening festivities at the tavern.

Traffic safety

The Village of Marathon reports “multiple close calls” involving pedestrians and vehicles during the Farmer’s Market held Thursday afternoons and is implementing some safety measures.

The following changes were implemented effective Aug. 4:

n On market days, no parking will be allowed on STH 107/Main Street between Third and Fourth Street between the hours of 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

n The Marathon City Police Department will increase traffic enforcement on STH 107/Main Street.

The village reminds motorists to reduce speeds when you encounter high pedestrian volume and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks. The village also reminds pedestrians to utilize the crosswalks on Main Street, Third Street and Fourth Street and be aware of the high volume of traffic in the area.

Class reunions

Marathon High School Class of 1967 will hold a 55th class reunion Friday, Sept. 30, 1-5 p.m.at the Marathon Sports Center. The class will attend the Sept. 16 homecoming football game and tour the high school. On Saturday, Sept.17, the graduates will join the Class of 1992 at an open house at Marathon City Heritage Center from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The classmates will go to Marathon Sports Center at 6 p.m. with moonlight bowling scheduled for 9 p.m.

The Marathon High School Class of 1992 will hold a reunion. Classmates will attend the Friday, Sept. 16, homecoming football game and attend an open house on Saturday, Sept. 17, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Marathon City Heritage Center. The group will socialize afterwards at the Arrow Tap Tavern starting at 6 p.m.


Jaws of Life demonstrationMarathon City firemen Austin Lemmer, Luke Jacobson and Dawson Lang on Saturday used Jaws of Life equipment to train on how to open up a car to extricate a trapped crash victim. The demonstration was held during a department open house.
