Volleyball champs

Addyson Nowak and Kaitlynn Hartnady, both of Edgar, recently won the sand doubles tournament at the Waupaca Boatride which will send them to the East Coast Championships in Clearwater, Fla., in November. They will be in Atlantic City on July 20-22 for AVP Beach Week. They represent the best of Wisconsin Ice Indoor and Sand volleyball.

Seasoned players

In the Seasoned players League, Louie/Werner finally had a team to play on July 7 at the Edgar Softball Complex, but the Round of Mulligans was not scared. Due to another cancellation, both teams used Pharm players to their advantage. Alex Mashek played for Louie/Werner and John P. for the Mullies, plus a few unnamed players. Jake Knetter, Dave Lindner and Mashek were 3-4 for Louie/ Werner accounting for nine of the team’s 12 hits in their 8-1 victory. John P. accounted for most of the Mullies’ offense. He had an in-the-park homerun and a hit. Chief, Lemms, Boehm and John G. each had a hit for the Mullies. Keith “Oz” was the winning pitcher for Louie/Werner as Tom is nursing multiple injures coming into the 2022 campaign.

The nightcap started out with both teams getting men on base, but neither team wanted to score. The bottom of the order got things going for Landmark. Pip, Fleabag and Butch got hits and Landmark a 4-0 lead. Edgar Lanes had no quit in them and fought back to make the score 8-5. A seven run seventh inning put the game away. Final score Landmark 16 and Edgar Lanes 6. Cody ended the game on a diving barehanded catch in centerfield. Dolly led Landmark going 4-4 with Bill and Fleabag collecting three hits each. Nathan has no batting average for the year but does have six RBIs on sac flies in three games.

On July 14, Louie/Werner stayed perfect during the 2022 season, pounding out more hits then Tom could remember. He wondered where all those hits were when he was pitching. Louie/Werner was led by Jake Knetter and Dave Lindner who both went 4-5. Every player for Louie/Werner had at least two hits. Keith “Ozzy” Osbourne was the winning pitcher, lowering his league leading ERA even more. Edgar Lanes had no comment on their 19-0 loss to Louie/Werner.

The game between Strobes and Landmark was exciting if you like defense. Both teams scored in the first. Strobes took a 2-1 lead in the third. Strobes tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning while Landmark could only muster up one run. The final score was Strobes Garage 5 Landmark 2. Some offensive facts for Landmark. Bill scored both runs. Darrell and Camouche had the RBIs, with Camouche getting his last hit in his 50’s. Brothers Rick and John had back to back bunt singles. Bill and Cody were 2-3. Nathan got his first hit of the year. Six players were 0-2 and one 0-3. Roy played well at third base while getting shelled by Strobes.

The Mullies had only two hits and an error against the Pharm. The highlight of the game for the Mullies was that all their players walked off the field on their own power. The Pharm was led by John Peterlik who was 3-3 with a homerun. Dave and Jason also had three hits in the Pharm’s 14-0 victory.

History chats

The Marathon County Historical Society’s weekly History Chats in July will take a look at unincorporated communities throughout the county. Join them to hear their origin stories and where they stand today.

There are a handful of communities in Marathon County that never quite grew into a village or city, but neither have they become ghost towns. Historical Society staff will take a short but closer look at four of these unincorporated (but distinct) places.

All History Chats programs begin at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays and will be streamed on YouTube and Facebook. They are also available on those locations as recorded programs if you can’t catch them live. They are also being played on Wausau’s public access channel.

These programs and the Historical Society’s History Speaks programs are a collaboration The programs are free to watch and open to all ages with no registration required. Call the Historical Society at 715-842-5750 for more information.

The History Chats schedule for July is as follows:

n July 21, Poniatowski. What makes Poniatowski so unique? Gary Gisselman will let us know what that is.

n July 28 - Knowlton. There is more to “know” about Knowlton. Join Ben Clark to hear about the history of this town.
