The Athens Lions Club is holding a fireworks display at dusk this Monday, July 4, on the field across from Athenian Living.

Dinner by the Gazebo

Dinner by the Gazebo this Friday night, July 1, will be hosted by the Erwin Schoenrock family.

Serving food will start at 5 p.m. and go until the end of the Old Timers Band concert. The food menu will consist of walking tacos, soda or water and various bars for dessert.

Proceeds from the food sales will help fund medical costs associated with Erwin’s battle with Stage 4 Renal Adenocarcinoma.

If it’s raning on Friday night, then the dinner and concert will be relocated to the Veterans Memorial Shelter in Memorial Park.

Any group interested in hosting a Dinner by the Gazebo during Athens Old Timers concerts on Friday nights this summer needs to call Jean at 715-257-7353 and leave a message if she doesn’t answer the phone.

Lions Club meetings

Athens-area residents are welcome to attend the Athens Lions Club’s monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, alternating between Balz Inn and Landmark Bar.

Anyone wtih questions can call Athens Lions Club member Steve Sondelski at 715-218-1496. New members and guests are always welcome at the monthly meetings.

Garden Walk

North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association is holding its 20th annual Garden Walk on Friday, July 15, from 1-7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 16, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

There is a fee for people to view six Athens and Marathon area gardens at the homes of Karen and Rick Guralski, Nick Peter, Claire and Bob Romanek and Jean and Doug Krueger in rural Athens and Dave Pickruhn and Barb and Korey Kaldunski in rural Marathon.

Baby strollers and pets are not allowed during the garden walks. The public should watch for windsocks at each entrance marking each garden featured in the Garden Walk.

June Book Club

The public is welcome to stop by the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch during the month of June to pick up a copy of the book titled, “The Light Through the Leaves” by author Glendy Vanderah, along with discussion questions.

People with questions on the June Book Club can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.

Grab & Go kit

During the month of June, adults can pick up a free Grab & Go kit from any of the nine Marathon County Public Library locations. The kit will contain supplies for making a beach-inspired mermaid barrette.

Kits are free and available while supplies last. People wanting more information can contact the MCPL main headquarters in Wausau at 715-261-7230.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on June 23 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Three games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won the first game and Steve Klockziem took second place. Alvira Henrichs won the second game and Aaron Totzke placed second. Butch Boris won the third game and Gale Verpoorten took second place. Jan Lake received low score.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday during summer, from 4-7 p.m., in Athens Veterans Memorial Park.
