Redhawks knock Reds out of first in division; Interwald sweeps Medford

DAIRYLAND LEAGUE BASEBALL

The Whittlesey Reds were knocked out of the top spot in Division B in the Dairyland League this weekend, falling twice to the Wisconsin Rapids Redhawks, who are now one of two undefeated teams in the division.

The Redhawks won an exciting 12-inning battle in Whittlesey Saturday, finally breaking the tie and winning 7-3. The teams met again Sunday in Rapids, where the Redhawks got a strong seveninning start from Caleb Krommenakker and rolled to an 8-1 win.

The Reds fell to 5-2 in league play and into third place in Division B behind the 5-0 Redhawks and the 6-0 Merrill Rangers, who stayed on top Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Pittsville River Bandits. Merrill won 16-6 and 11-7 to knock the Bandits down to 2-3.

Merrill hosts Rapids this Sunday in the battle of mid-season unbeatens, then the teams will meet again in Rapids for a 7 p.m. game on June 30.

Whittlesey will look to get back on track Saturday when it heads to Tomahawk for a 6 p.m. first pitch against the 1-5 Titans. The teams will face each other again Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Whittlesey.

The other local highlight over the weekend was a doubleheader sweep for the Interwald Woodticks over the visiting Medford Moondogs on Saturday afternoon. Interwald took the opener 15-4 and game two 11-4 to improve to 4-2 in Division A, good for third place behind 5-0 Everest and 3-1 Rib Lake. Medford fell to 1-4 in league play.

Interwald looks to keep the momentum heading into a key July 3 doubleheader with Rib Lake. The Woodticks host winless Spirit Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Rib Lake. The Twins (0-7) were no match for Everest on Saturday night, falling 33-0 to the Merchants.

Also coming up this weekend, Rib Lake will play two with Medford, hosting the Moondogs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Game two in the weekend set will be at Medford’s JC Field Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

In Division B, Marshfield (1-5) is at Westboro (0-5) for a 1:30 p.m. game on Sunday. Those teams were scheduled to make up an early-season postponement in Marshfield on Wednesday night.
