Friends planning for events at Brunet Island State Park
The Friends of Brunet Island State Park was organized in spring 2021, with the mission statement “to support the interpretive and educational, historical, scientific and recreational services at Brunet Island State Park.” The group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, recognized by the Wisconsin DNR, to support park programs and activities, in cooperation with park personnel. The friends group participates in, and supports, the maintenance and improvement of the community resource. Membership helps sustain educational and recreational programs, while experiencing the wonder of nature throughout the seasons, with others who enjoy the great outdoors.
Inside the historic pavilion on the Chippewa River, a rustic, but bright sign, states “Where Friends and Nature Meet” – and that says it all.
Group members meet once a month, seasonally at the park, but winter meetings differ. At times, activities such as nature walks and kayaking for those interested are included. The park manager also attends to give updates about future projects, etc.
Other times, a meeting with an agenda and bring-yourown- lunch occurs. Meeting minutes are recorded and distributed to members, and special events are announced and shared.
Some upcoming events scheduled include the following:
• A nature trail hike, led by naturalist volunteer Sue Crisp, Saturday, July 2, at 10 a.m., gathering at the small Jean Brunet Trailhead. The trail and small parking area is immediately across the bridge, close to the island/circle drive.
• Meeting at the boat landing (bring a watercraft), Tuesday, July 12, at 4 p.m., with a potluck at 6 p.m. in the pavilion, with the meeting at 7 p.m.
Future events to look forward to, are Dutch oven cooking, flying squirrels, and pelts and skulls.
Group pamphlets with a membership form and options are available during business hours, at park headquarters, or call the park office for additional details, at 715-239-6888.
