Acting as host for the first round of Regionals, the Cadott volleyball squad then headed to an away match for the second round.

Oct. 19 vs. Nekoosa (W 3-0)

Coming in as a No. 8 seed in their bracket of the Division 3 playoffs, Cadott faced off against the No. 9 Nekoosa Papermakers in the opening round of Regionals.

It was Cadott in the first set, 25-14, but the Papermakers rallied in the second, to make it a close contest. The Hornets wouldn’t go down and took the win, 25-21.

Nekoosa kept fighting for the third set, but Cadott held on for the 25-20 win, earning the 3-0 victory and advancing to the next playoff match.

“We continued to stay aggressive through the match,” said coach Lynn Schreiner, “both with our serving and offense, which helped us to overcome a few tight spots.”

Leading on the night, was junior Lauryn Goettl, with 9 kills, 4 aces, 8 assists, 10 digs and 3 blocks. Following that, was sophomore Emma Kowalczyk, with 6 kills, 2 aces and 12 digs, and junior Elly Eiler, who recorded 6 kills, 8 assists and 10 digs.

Senior Olivia Goodman ended the night with 6 kills and 4 digs.

“Nekoosa is a sound defensive team and a good test moving forward,” said Schreiner.

Oct. 21 vs. Marathon (L 3-0)

Making the trek to No. 1 Marathon, Cadott came ready to play and play they did in the second-round Regional. The first set saw the Hornets battle for the win, going extra match points. However, Marathon pulled out the set, 32-30.

The second set also went to Marathon, 25-17, and while Cadott continued to fight in every play, Marathon walked away with the third and final set, 25-18.

With the 3-0 victory from the home team, Cadott’s season came to an end.

“We fought incredibly hard last night, against a solid Marathon team,” said Schreiner. “The girls played smart and hard, and really left everything on the floor.”

Goettl finished up with 16 kills, 12 assists, 13 digs and 3 blocks, while junior Elly Eiler came away with 11 kills, 14 assists and 6 digs. Junior Laken Ryan added 19 digs, and Kowalczyk recorded 4 kills, 2 assists and 9 digs.

The Hornets now bid adieu to seniors Makenna Barone (who was lost early in the season to injury), Goodman and Emily Malecki.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team and how far they came, after a bump in the road early in the season,” said Schreiner.
