Knights fall just short of sending athletes to Sate

By Ginna Young

It was a great year, for the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Knights Track program, with increased numbers and many personal bests achieved. Putting a cap on the season, the squad traveled to Colfax, for the Sectional competition May 26.

“The athletes performed very well last night,” said coach Laurie Bowe. “After looking at other Sectionals, we had a pretty hard Sectional.”

Falling just short of advancing to the State meet, was junior Avery Turany in the pole vault event, with a fifth place finish (11-06), with junior Dylan Bowe right behind for sixth (11-00).

Sophomore Emma Lechleitner also was just shy of qualifying for State competition, placing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.56).

“She cut another second off her time, but it just was not enough,” said L. Bowe.

Junior Blake Anders finished ninth in the 400-meter dash (54.96), while junior Dawson Munson was 13th in the 110-meter hurdles (18.87) and sophomore Brooke Sime ended in 14th in the 100-meter dash (13.83).

On the relay side of things, the girls 4x200-meter relay team of Sime, Lechleitner and sophomores Marcella Boehm, Lauren Samardzich and Haily Duffy, notched sixth place (1:54.99). The girls 4x100-meter relay team placed seventh (53.33), consisting of runners Sime, Boehm, Lechleitner, Duffy and Samardzich.

“The relays set new Knights records,” said L. Bowe. For the boys, in the 4x400-meter relay, the team of D. Bowe, freshman Hunter Anders, Turany, B. Anders, and sophomores Jayden Joas-Shaw and Bentley Spangler, came in 12th (3:47.84).

“Unfortunately, we have no one advancing to the State track meet next weekend,” said L. Bowe.
