Knights take one from Pirates at end of season

In a non-conference battle May 17, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball squad hosted the Gilman Pirates, with the match a close contest.
Gilman struck first for a run in the opening inning, but the Knights added two runs in the second, to take a one-run lead. Another run in the third inning put the Knights up by two, but the Pirates wouldn’t go down, recording a run in the fourth.
The Knights scored one last time, coming up with a run in the fifth, while holding the Pirates scoreless in the sixth and seventh, to take a 4-2 win.
Sophomore Brooke Anderson went all seven innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs and a walk, while striking out 2 batters.
On the offensive side, junior Michayla Turchen, and sophomores Makya Hetherington and Grace Harycki each had a hit. Sophomore Teryn Close and freshman Izabelle Schwingle each walked once in the game.
Overall, the Knights were 5-8 on the season and 4-6 in the East Lakeland Conference, heading into the playoffs.
