“We are very excited to have won the Regional.”
Those words came from Cadott wrestling coach Josh Spaeth, after the Hornets hosted and won their Division 3 WIAA Regional competition Feb. 12.
“That is our main goal each and every year,” said Spaeth. “As a whole, our wrestlers gave their best effort and we persevered.”
Cadott won the competition, collecting 271 team points, with Glenwood City 53 points behind for second. Individually, the Hornets sent 10 wrestlers on to Sectionals.
Crowned as Regional champions, were senior Logan Harel (120 pounds); junior Brayden Sonnentag (126); senior Kaleb Sonnentag (138); junior Tristan Drier (152); junior Dawson Webster (182); and senior Gavin Tegels (220).
Harel won over Stanley-Boyd’s Alexander Nitz, with a 5-3 decision, while B. Sonnentag took his match over Breckin Burzynski (Stanley-Boyd), with a 10-1 major decision.
K. Sonnentag finished his match by fall, in 2:44, over Glenwood City’s Mitchell McGee and Drier won an 8-3 decision over Max Schmitt, of Spring Valley-Elmwood.
Webster won his bout over Noah Brite, Glenwood City, by a 1:26 fall, while Tegels won by forfeit over Boyceville’s John Klefstad.
Coming in second, were senior Ethan Duck (145); junior Cole Pfeiffer (160); sophomore Caden Kingston (170); and junior Levi Lindsay (195).
Duck won over Glenwood City’s Jonas Draxler, with a 5-0 decision and Pfeiffer got the win over Joel Anderson (Spring Valley-Elmwood), by fall, in just 18 seconds. Kingston won his match in a no-contest over Connor Gross, of Glenwood City, while Lindsay won over Glenwood City’s Carter Clemens, by a 1:14 fall.
Freshman Kaleb Lodahl (106) placed third, after dropping his match by no contest to Boyeville’s Noah Evenson. Despite that, Lodahl got the call to be an alternate at Sectionals.
“So, we will have 11 wrestlers competing for a chance to represent Cadott at the individual WIAA State Wrestling Tournament,” said Spaeth.
Juniors Nick Fasbender (132) and Kane Mengel (285) also placed third, with sophomore Lukas Simenson (113) coming in fifth.
Cadott will now host Sectionals Feb. 15, to determine if the team moves on to State competition.
“It is my hope Hornet fans fill the stands on Tuesday evening,” said Spaeth.
