Hornets stung by Orioles, storm over the Thunder
By Ginna Young
Getting their games in between strong storms that hit the area, the Cadott boys basketball team took on two conference opponents over the week, splitting the matches.
Dec. 14 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (L 82-69)
Acting as host for the rival Stanley-Boyd Orioles, Cadott kept pace throughout the first half, only down by seven points at the break. The second half looked much the same, but with the Orioles’ slight advantage, the game went their way, 82-69.
“[The] boys fought hard,” said coach Dusty Burish. Leading for Cadott, was freshman Warren Bowe, who knocked down four shots from beyond the arc, ending with 20 points, and freshman Braden Schneider, who made three, three-pointers, with 16 points.
Senior Ryan Sonnentag and junior Tegan Ritter each had 11 points, followed by sophomore Nolan Blum, with 4 points. Senior Ethan West notched a three-point shot for 3 points, while senior Cameron Messenger and sophomore Brodee Burish chipped in with 2 points each.
Dec. 17 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (W 78-76)
A few days later, the Hornets were off to Osseo-Fairchild, in a close contest. Cadott led for the first half, with a 15-point lead over the Thunder at halftime.
The second half saw the Thunder come roaring back, but Cadott held on for a slim 78-76 win.
“The boys played very well, pushing the ball up the court,” said D. Burish. My two freshman Braden Schneider and Warren Bowe stepped up again in the scoring column.”
Sonnentag also came through for the Hornets. “He attacked the rim hard and helped seal the game with some crucial free throws during the game,” said D. Burish.
Sonnentag ended with 24 points, including two shots from long range, with four shots from three-point land by Bowe, who finished with 31 points. Ritter came away with 17 points, while Schneider had 15, with nine of those coming as three-pointers.
