Hornets runners dealing with injuries and illness

By Ginna Young

It’s been a rough running season for Cadott, as the cross country teams are plagued with injury and illness.

Sept. 30 vs. Osseo Invitational

Beginning the week’s competition at Osseo, the Hornets manned a full boys team, taking seventh place, but the girls side was short of a complete team.

“Teams are dealing with illness,” said coach Tom Weiss. “Either coming back from several days away for illness, or the other.”

Junior Peter Weir finished high for the boys, coming in second, with a time of 17:59.5, followed by freshman Wyatt Wellner in 29th (21:51.1) and freshman Ewan Weir in 31st (21:59.6).

Sophomore Sage Handrick came next, placing 45th (23:56), and junior Jake Rowe ended in 54th (25:56.1).

For the girls, freshman Mia Weggen came in 25th (27:22), with junior Lucy Lindeman in 31st (27:47.7) and senior Mallory Kyes in 46th (30:43.1).

“Strong effort from everyone,” said Weiss.

Oct. 2 vs. Altoona Invitational

Finishing out the week, the Hornets took part in an invitational at Altoona, but again, the girls team was incomplete, and with illness and injury, their efforts were affected.

“Boys had a full team for only the second time this season and they gave an outstanding effort,” said Weiss. “All five boys were part of the Homecoming football run and all ran at least four miles on Friday.”

The boys team placed sixth and individually, P. Weir took third (17:32.8). Wellner ran for 28th (21:37.1), with E. Weir following that for 33rd (22:26.1). Hanrick came in 45th (24:24.9) and Rowe was right behind, for 47th (24:59.4).

Weggen ended in 27th for the girls (27:43.2), and sophomore Jaycee Stephens finished in 35th (30:06.8). Lindeman was just a step behind for 36th (30:50.7), as was senior Izzy Chady, for 37th (38:53).

“The two teams that ran well are the middle school teams,” said Weiss. “[The] girls took first, with Iszy Sonnentag taking first.”
