– Time For A Tiara: Column by Ginna Young –

Remember when Hannah Montana (Miley Stewart) had to hide in the beach hut, so those mean high schoolers wouldn’t make fun of her ugly birthday sweater? Or when Zack and Cody accidentally got Mr. Mosby fired? What about when Dory threatened the crab who refused to tell where the clown fish went? And we can’t forget how Powerline lit up the stage, as he danced with Goofy and Max!

If you’re scratching your head, I guess you’re not a Disney fan, or are a casual fan, instead of a diehard fan like myself. See, a few months ago, my dear friend gave me access to her Disney+ subscription, which is a paid streaming service on your computer, SmartTV or Smartphone.

It has almost all the Disney-made, related content, with a few exceptions (yes, I AM still waiting for Famous Jett Jackson and Cory in the House). Movies, series, shorts – you name it – even documentaries. It’s all there, on demand.

These last few months, have made a huge difference to me, as watching the old favorites and discovering new ones, takes me back to my childhood. I’ve always been one who needed music or TV to help me get chores done, and now, in this day of technology, I can take the shows I love anywhere.

Washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom, folding clothes, even weeding the flower boxes, doesn’t seem as long or tedious. Because now, I can have some entertainment that makes me breeze through whatever task I’m doing.

It also provides me some much needed laughter, as I watch the escapades that unfold on the screen. You wouldn’t think I’d be able to concentrate on the my chore at hand or the selection to watch, but strangely, I can, and it works great for me.

I think I watched Frozen 2 about three times that first week I received the access, so much so, it gave me a whopping headache and I actually skipped sleep to finish it, two nights in a row. In hindsight, I may have chosen poorly, on that one.

At times, I’d rather watch the shows and movies on there, instead of eating. No, I don’t have a problem, I can quit anytime I want! But first, I need to finish Wreck It Ralph and Loki. What? I can’t just leave them hanging, can I?

It’s not just a happy feeling to revisit all the old shows I loved growing up (or in my late 20s), but also to see the shows that aren’t on TV or at the movies, such as all the Marvel limited series that have come out lately.

Going to the movies is also not an option right now, so when Cruella was released, my friend purchased the “extra” access and I was able to watch that, along with Mom, who was glued to my tiny phone screen. We don’t have a SmartTV, we still have the old, boxy type, which is 18 years old.

It’s on my Black Friday list, but I never seem to get to the shopping. Oh well, a 2.5x5.25-inch screen is plenty big enough, right? No? Oh, well, that explains that headache I got from watching Frozen 2 over and over.

Meanwhile, I’ll just keep watching and exploring what Disney+ has to offer, and remain so grateful for my friend’s generosity. She probably has no idea how happy it’s made me and how much I need that happiness.

I probably should try to limit how much I watch it, as I’ve taken to bringing up a show while I wait for someone to meet me or before a meeting starts while I’m still in the car. At times like these, I have to remember it’s not other people’s faults that they sometimes interrupt my show.

It is hard though, not to scream, “Not now, I’m watching Disney+. Come back after this episode!”
