Athens loses to North foe Rib Lake in regional
Edgar’s baseball squad beat Wausau Newman, 8-4, in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal home game. Edgar now plays today (Wednesday) in a home regional championship against Rib Lake.
Senior Kyle Brewster earned the pitching win against the Cardinals on Tuesday. Seniors Austin Dahlke and Brayden Baumgartner both doubled in the victory. Baumgartner batted two for two with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Brewster stole two bases.
Edgar now has a 16-3 record this season going into the regional title game against Rib Lake, which has a 12-7 record. Rib Lake downed Athens, 5-2, in a home regional semifinal on Tuesday. Junior Cooper Diedrich had three hits in the loss.
Athens senior Dayne Diethelm pitched the Bluejays to a 13-3 home regional quarterfinal win against Northland Lutheran/ Wisconsin Valley Lutheran on Thursday. He struck out six batters while only giving up three hits, two walks and one unearned run.
Cooper Diedrich hit two for four with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Cobie Ellenbecker, Jake Denzine and Dayne Diethelm also each had two RBIs in the playoff victory.
Edgar lost to Medford, 5-2, in Thursday’s non-conference matchup between two highly-ranked teams in the state this season. Medford is ranked fourth in Division 2 and Edgar is third in Division 4. Senior Konnor Wolf was the losing pitcher in Medford.
Tigers vs. Red Raiders
The Stratford and Marathon baseball teams will play each other in the WIAA Division 3 regional championship yet again this season, only this year the game will be in Stratford today (Wednesday).
Stratford took care of business with an easy 13-3 home win in six innings against Auburndale on Tuesday, to advance into the regional finale.
Tigers head coach relied on senior pitcher Kale Weisenberger to beat the Eagles, so he could save his No. 1 pitcher, senior Riley Bauman, against Marathon in the regional title game. Weisenberger pitched a gem against Auburndale with six strikeouts, while only surrendering two hits and five walks in the victory.
Stratford’s top of its batting lineup produced time and time again against Auburndale. Riley Bauman did his job as the team’s cleanup hitter by collecting four RBIs. Stratford now has an 18-3 record going into the regional championship against Marathon, which has a 16-7 record.
Marathon’s baseball team beat Neillsville, 9-4, in Tuesday’s home regional semifinal. Marathon shutout Spencer, 4-0, in Thursday’s regional quarterfinal contest. Senior Brock Warren struck out 10 Rocket hitters.
Senior Mike Hahn and freshman Grant Warren both doubled, while Brock Warren and Pierson Hamann each hit sacrifice fly RBIs in the playoff victory.
