Knights battle wind in away race at Clear Lake
A windy day created difficult running conditions at Clear Lake May 18, for the Cornell-Lake Holcombe track athletes. The boys team took sixth in the invitational, while the girls placed seventh.
“They struggled with timing last night, and missed some results,” said coach Laurie Bowe.
Despite the harsh conditions, the boys 4x400-meter relay team earned second, with a time of (4:20.81), while the 800-meter relay runners came in third (1:41.20).
Individually, sophomore Avery Turany captured second in the pole vault competition (9-0), while freshman Jayden Joas-Shaw came in fifth (6-0). Senior Austin Bowe ended the triple jump in fifth (35-2) and freshman Blake Anders was right behind, in sixth place (34-9).
Anders also placed high, earning fifth place in the 400-meter dash (58.66). A. Bowe also competed in the 200-meter dash, ending 10th (25.98), and senior Jack Porter finished the 1,600-meter run in 10th place (6:24.88). Sophomore Dawson Munson finished 10th in the high jump (5-0).
For the girls, the 800 relay brought home first (2:02.56) and the 4x100-meter relay team earned third place (58.59).
On the individual side, junior Brooke Lechleitner took top honors, placing first in the 400 dash (65.09) and second in the 200 dash (29.14). Following that up, freshman Lauren Samardzich was sixth in the 800-meter run (3:00.66).
Freshman Brooke Sime earned an eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash (14.99), with freshman Marcella Boehm right behind in 11th (15.41). Freshman Haily Duffy ended 11th in the 200 dash (32.50) and junior Carly Vavra came in 12th in the discus event (69-11).
“Overall, we ran well for the weather conditions,” said L. Bowe. “It was very windy, so we did not run our best times, but placed well in the events.”
