Knights avoid sting of Hornets in close contest

Stepping out of the conference, the Cornell- Lake Holcombe Knights and Cadott Hornets took part in a softball battle May 24, as the Knights hosted the team from just up the road. It would be a tough contest for both programs, with each going scoreless in the first and second innings.

The Knights got things going in the third inning, with a run, which Cadott answered in the fourth, with a run of their own. Not to be outdone, the Knights came up with two runs in the top of the fourth, to take the lead, 3-1.

Neither team scored in the fifth, but the Hornets weren’t going down without a fight and rallied in the sixth, to knock in one run. The rest of the game remained scoreless and the Knights claimed the victory, 3-2.

“We finally put a whole game together defensively last night vs. Cadott,” said Knights coach Andy Lorenzen. “Cadott is a very good team and that was a huge win for us for seeding with the playoffs.”

Taking the win on the pitcher’s mound, was senior Izzy Clark, who went seven innings for the Knights, striking out 12 and only allowing 4 hits. For Cadott, senior Calli Bremness struck out 8, while giving up 7 hits and 3 runs. Junior Makenna Barone went almost two innings for the Hornets, with 3 strikeouts and no hits on her record.

“Both Calli and Makenna pitched really well tonight,” said Hornets coach Kari Moldrem. “We just need to get back to hitting like we were earlier this season, and then we will be putting Ws in the win column again.”

Offensively, junior Teaira Spaeth and sophomore Michayla Turchen led the Knights with 2 hits each, followed by Clark, and seniors Alyssa Helland and Kaitlyn Heinzen, with 1 hit each.

For Cadott, junior Olivia Goodman had 2 hits, while Barone and Meadow Barone each chipped in with a hit.

“We made all the routine plays, and didn’t have any physical or mental breakdowns,” said Lorenzen. “We are still looking for key hits, but we are continuing to improve.”

The Knights now sit at 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the East Lakeland Conference, with the Hornets sitting at 6-5 overall and 5-1 in West Cloverbelt Conference action.
