NASP ARCHERY

Youth archers from Medford and Gilman won two bullseye championships and a trio of 3-D championships in Medford’s annual National Archery in the Schools Program shoot, held virtually this past weekend across Wisconsin.

While Medford archers shot at Medford Area Middle School, the rest of the competitors shot at their home facilities. The eighth annual bullseye competition still drew 383 shooters, down just 15 from last year’s total of 398, while the 3-D shoot did have a sharp reduction in participants with 62.

The Gilman Pirate Archery Club won the high school team championship and claimed both individual high school championships in the bullseye shoot. Senior Kylee Burton had the competition’s highest score with a 296, coming up just four points shy of perfection. In 15 shots from 10 meters and 15 more from 15 meters, she hit the 10-point ring on the target 26 times and the nine-point ring four times to finish eight points ahead of female runner-up Kayla Brantner of Elk Mound. Pirate Tatum Weir was ninth among high school girls with a 277.

Gilman sophomore Casey Grunseth made 19 10-point shots and won the high school boys title with a score of 288, two points ahead of his teammate Dalton Wisocky, who made 18 10-point shots.

Gilman’s team score of 3,229, which included the scores of several middle school archers, topped a five-team field that included the second-place team from the Medford Archery Club (3,185). The Raiders’ high-school team was led by sophomore Kirsten Weix, who shot a 280 to place seventh out of 56 high school girls; sophomore Landen Viergutz, who shot a 277 to place eighth out of 50 high school boys, and freshman Jenna Wickersheim, who shot a 276 to place 13th in the girls standings.

Medford finished second in the middle school team standings with 3,074 points. Stratford won it with 3,180 points. Gilman (2,887) was fifth out of nine teams and Medford II (2,756) was sixth. Medford’s Ashton Behling was seventh out of 97 boys with a 273. Mattie Gebert was sixth out of 83 girls with a 271, while Kyanna Mallien was eighth with a 269. Gilman was led by a ninth-place score of 271 from Wyatt Webster.

In the elementary competition, Gilman’s Kennedy Buske (248) was third out of 43 girls and Reece Weir (242) was fifth. Medford’s Breanna Lemke (238) was sixth among girls and Jake Erl (233) was 10th out of 54 boys. Spring Hill of Wisconsin Dells had the only full team in the division and scored 2,217 points.
