Gerald Klimpke


Gerald “Jerry” J. Klimpke, 78, town of Johnson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, at Colonial Health and Rehabilitation Center in Colby, under the care of St. Croix Hospice. He was born Nov. 24, 1943, in the town of Johnson, son of the late Walter and Lavina (Christenson) Klimpke. On September 2, 1967, he married Phyllis Ortman at Peace Lutheran Church, town of Frankfort. She survives. Jerry farmed in the town of Johnson his entire life. The two most important pastimes in his life were spending time with his family and farming his land. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Phyllis; two children: Tina (James) Borter and William (Joy) Klimpke; five grandchildren: Jessica (Matt) Hein, Zach (Alexa) Borter, Skyler Geiger and Alex and Johnathon Klimpke; five great-grandchildren: Jacob, Emilie and Braxton Hein and James and Kirsten Geiger; step-great-grandson, Joxton Boushan; three siblings: Walter Jr. (Carol) Klimpke, Shirley (Clarence) Liss and Ruth Komarek; four sistersin- law: Donna Solchenbuger, Betty (David) Holbach, Martha Rodman and Barbara Ortman, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Anna Klimpke; five brothers-in-law: Jack Ortman, James Ortman, Lester Solchenbuger, Gene Rodman and Donald Komarek; and one sister-in-law, Ramona Ortman. A funeral service will be at noon on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church, town of Frankfort. Rev. Jeff Tarras will preside. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Steven Schaefer

Steven Schaefer


Steven W. Schaefer, 66, Edgar, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at the Waterford at Colby, under the care of Heartland Hospice. He was born August 4, 1956, in Wausau, son of the late Arnold “Shrimp” Schaefer and Virginia Gall. On July 5, 1996, he married Julie Baumann at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives. For over 30 years, Steven worked as an assistant accountant, scheduler, and purchasing agent for Linetec in Wausau, until his retirement. He was a longtime active member of St. John Catholic Church, Edgar, and enjoyed working many fish fries, was a lay distributor and served on the finance committee. Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed playing men’s slow pitch and was a member of the Seasoned Players Softball League in Edgar. Steven especially loved to spend time with his family at sporting events, holidays and many family campouts. Survivors include his wife, Julie, Edgar; his daughter, Erica Schaefer, Green Bay; eleven siblings: Kathy (Randy) Kuck, Athens, Michael (Debra) Schaefer, Gilman, Julie (Frank) Sterzinger, Minocqua, Daniel (Jane) Schaefer, Athens, Mary Jo (Doug) Bruesewitz, Athens, Joe (Jill) Schaefer, Colby, Diane (Blain) Rodman, Wausau, Terri (Mark) Peissig, Dorchester, Jean (Tony) Ludwig, Medford, Jolyn (Chris) Krohn, Wisconsin Dells and Jim (Nancy) Schaefer, Medford; 34 nieces and nephews; and 26 great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one nephew, Kristopher Kuck; and his parents-in-law, Ubald and Doris Baumann. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022, at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. Rev. Alan Wierzba will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 unitl 8 p.m. at the church and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. Russell “Russ” James Buss passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. A visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon on Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan. Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Michael Mathey will preside. Russ was born on June 11, 1944, the son of Chester and Lillian (Venzke) Buss in Wausau. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan. Russ attended Bruckerville Grade School and graduated from Dor-Abby High School in 1962. After high school, he attended farm short course in Madison and upon returning home he farmed and for a short time drove the can milk truck. On May 29, 1965, Russ married the love of his life, Shirley Marzinske at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Dorchester. They were married for 57 years and raised four children together. Russ served his community in many active roles serving in various capacities in the church, was on the board of Taylor Electric for several years and Dorchester Co-op and was a member of the Colby FFA Alumni for many years. His hobbies included collecting toy tractors, going to steam and gas shows, reading agricultural history and playing cards. He always enjoyed watching the activities of his children and grandchildren which were his pride and joy. Russ instilled his values of faith, family, friendship and hard work in his children and grandchildren. Those who will cherish his memory include his loving wife, Shirley, of Athens; son, Warren of Abbotsford; daughter, Patricia (Shane) Hammel of Abbotsford; son-in-law, John Baeten of De Pere; four grandchildren: Zackary Buss, Isaac, Olivia and Ashton Hammel; great-granddaughter, Oaklynn Buss; brother-in-law, Ed Marzinske of Dorchester and sister-in-law, Diane Marzinske (John Borgemoen) of Lake Holcombe; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Baeten; son, Gary Buss; grandsons: Jack Baeten and Anthony Hammel; parents, Chester and Lillian Buss and father and mother-in-law, Edwin and Loretta Marzinske. Dorothy Anna Hilda (Grieser) Landwehr, 95, slipped quietly into eternal life on October 1, 2022. Services will be held Friday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer UCC, Stratford. The family will receive visitors from 9 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Patti Steevens will preside, and Sauter/Rembs Funeral Home is overseeing arrangements. The honor of pallbearer has been given to Dorothy’s grandsons. Dorothy was born February 26, 1927, at home in the Town of Hamburg, Marathon County. While quite young, her family moved to a farm in the March Rapids area near Stratford, where she attended the nearby school and the Lutheran church. While still a teenager she and her older sister moved to the Milwaukee area and worked as live-in housekeepers. Later, she moved in with her aunt and uncle in Wausau and was employed tying fishing flies. Dorothy met her husband and lifelong waltz partner, Kenneth Landwehr, at a local dance, and they married October 8, 1949. They shared most of their life together on the family dairy farm east of Stratford, where she kept house, milked cows, cultivated a huge garden, canned produce and meat, and a hundred other farm chores. Dorothy was a talented seamstress, making most of the clothes for the five children they were blessed with. She was also a longtime member of Ebenezer UCC and an active member of the Evening Circle and Ladies’ Aid. For “pin” money she worked several years for the local ginseng farms. The pair built and moved into their dream home in the woods on the river in 1989 when their son took over the family farm. Ken and Dorothy travelled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, and celebrated fiftyfive years of marriage before Ken’s passing in 2004. Dorothy then moved to the Donald Sykes apartments in Stratford where she resided for seventeen years, until her final hospitalization and move to the House of the Dove in April. Dorothy is survived by her children: Michael (Janice) Landwehr, Linda (Keith) Richards, Betty (Michael) Olson, Jenny (Marty) Reiff, all of Stratford, and Dennis (Julie) Landwehr of Escanaba, Mich.; ten grandchildren: Anne (Josh) Dick, Lora (Chris) Ledden, Nicholas Landwehr, Lucas (Katrina Croft) Richards, Sarah Richards, Heidi Olson, Lukas Oswald, Emma Landwehr, Hunter Reiff and Sam Reiff.; eleven great-grandchildren: Jacob, Annabelle, Michael and Michaela Dick, Keenen, Jayden and Tori Landwehr, Easton Ledden, Jourdyn and Landon Landwehr and Aspen Richards; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers: Ervin, Hilbert, Elmer, Marvin and Milton Grieser, and sister, Gladys Lloyd; and all her brothers and sisters-in-law. Shirley R. Denzin, age 92, of Milan, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, at Athenian Living in Athens under the tender care of Compassus Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens. Rev. Donn Radde will preside. Family and friends are welcome from noon until the time of service Sunday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is entrusted with the arrangements. Shirley was born on January 25, 1930, the daughter of Albert and Caroline (Wellman) Fasse in Milan. She graduated salutatorian from Abbotsford High School in 1948. On August 29, 1953, Shirley was united in marriage to William Denzin at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan. He preceded her in death on March 17, 2013. Shirley worked at Laabs Cheese Factory, the Dairy Bar, Figi’s and was a cook at the nursing home in Colby. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens and a member of the Ladies Aid and sang in the church choir. Shirley enjoyed music, including playing the concertina, and kittens. Most importantly, she loved and cherished her family. Shirley is survived by her three daughters: Janine Hupe of Madison, Maureen (Gary) Belanger of Athens and Corrine (Duane) Bauer of Marshfield; 15 grandchildren: Nate Hupe, Miranda (Doug) Johnson, Rochelle (Kelly) Blosl, Todd (Verica) Hupe, Sarah (Clayton) Venzke, Mindy (Nick) Young, Becca (Brian) Simpson, Elaine (Stephen Hicks) Brubaker, Becca (Randy) Ayer, Liara (Matthew) Bramm, Cody (Samantha) Bauer, Robin (fiancé, Jordon Miller) Bauer, Holly Bauer (Andrew Reseburg) and Tony Bauer; 16 great-grandchildren: Sydney Venzke, Callie Davis, Owen and Zooey Simpson, Jacob and Lily Young, Juliette and Danny Hupe, Derek Johnson, Derek Willman, Brittany Barritt, Kristen (Dustin) Schecklman, Taylor Hupe, Wyatt Bauer and twins on the way.
